We ordered our wedding cake through Aggie's. The service we received before the wedding was absolutely fantastic, and the guests loved the cake. They also decorated it very nicely as we had asked. So, why only three stars? First, we had ordered three cakes, 2 three layer and a 5 layer. The 5 layer showed up as a 4 layer. I called and told them what was wrong, and they replied that the cakes all together did serve 300 people (not thinking about the fact we had paid for approximately 410 servings, so at a minimum of $2.50 per slice that's a loss of at least $275 worth of cake). Since the bigger cake was supposed to have a different type of cake per layer, they asked me to state what the layers should have been. When they knew which was missing, they happened to have an 80 serving circular sheet cake unmade which they could quickly fill and decorate. They brought it quickly with many apologizes. We figured it wasn't a huge loss (we had 120-130 guests, people were going to be able to have cake!), and used it as our cutting cake. As the night went on and the wonderful staff at the reception hall was cutting the cake, we realized the bottom layer of one of the three layer cakes was wrong: a marble with fudge filling (something we never ordered) instead of a white cake with cream cheese and fresh raspberries. They had accidentally used the bottom layer of that cake as a layer in the now 4 layer cake. The marble with fudge fill should have been a layer in the bigger cake, but it should have been banana cake not marble. I have not told them about this error yet, so I cannot give you an iteration of how they would handle this. I understand we did ask for a complicated order, but they said they could do it. If there was an issue they should have told us. The man who delivered the sheet cake with apologizes mentioned they had had a few people out of work lately due to illness, and it is a family run bakery so I can understand how short staffing can hurt a business. They should have been much more careful with how they made the cakes though, especially since they are known as a great place for wedding cakes. So now the main question is: would I order from them again? I think so, but not if it was a complicated order like our cakes. The staff is nice, and the cake was very good. They were able to make a replacement layer and deliver it quickly. He apologized profusely for the error. And, the decorating they did was very beautiful. We ordered many flavors of cake, I would highly suggest the apricot french filling with white cake or a fresh raspberry/ cream cheese filled white cake. Those were my two favorites. The kids loved the all chocolate one (looked like a black tux) when they found out it would dye their mouths black... I don't regret that one bit!
I heard about Phoenix Hair Studio from my friend Sandra. It was the first Tuesday of the month and that meant PTA meeting night. I already had my outfit picked out; a sleek fitted black suit jacket and a pencil skirt to match. The imminent barrage of mom jeans and overdone makeup would be no match. Still- something was missing. As I peered in the mirror to model my new outfit it hit me. My hair was a mess! Something had to be done to this misshapen mop or all would be for naught. Where would I go and who could fit me in on such short notice? I suddenly remembered how gorgeous Sandra’s hair looked at our last MADD (mothers against drunk driving) meeting, and the name stuck out in my mind –Phoenix Hair Studio. I phoned right away and sure enough there was an opening. I was still a little leery though. I have to admit I’m quite picky when it comes to my hair- to put it nicely. When I arrived at the salon I was immediately impressed with the clean, open, and friendly atmosphere. Everything ran like clockwork from the beginning. Andrea Maleu was my stylist and a master in her own right. She took me in and really listened like she had known me for years. I had a picture of my finished style, but it was sub par compared to the vision Andrea suggested. We decided on a style that would be practical and impress, and Andrea made suggestions about what would look age appropriate and seasonal. This was my first salon experience I’d actually enjoyed, and my cut and color look fantastic. Phoenix Hair Studio was professional, affordable, and I would recommend Andrea’s hair genius to anyone and everyone!
Salon Nova provides the best service in the country. I know it is a bold statement, but I travel all over the United States and have lived in downtown Chicago Magnificent Mile Area for 10 years. I am so satisfied with not only the beautiful lashes Nova has created for me, but with the way I am treated by all of the talented professionals at this salon. Nova owns the salon (obviously) and there is definitely pride in ownership. This industrious young man and his staff provide a myriad of luxury services. Among the products and services he provides, my favorites are his lash products that he patented himself and Michael’s Keratin treatment. The salon itself is just like Nova, stylish and calm. Even though he is extremely busy, he has somehow managed to avoid the horrible noisy bustle that other high profile salons can not seem to avoid. I am in the aesthetic industry and have the privilege of seeing many beautifying treatments from all over the country. Working for a plastic surgeon for 15 years has given me insight as to what beauty is and what natural looks like. In other words, I have opportunity to go anywhere and I know my stuff! I choose Nova for his natural looking results. I am constantly asked how I got my lashes to grow like this. They are always surprised to find that they are extensions and immediately want Nova’s contact information. One word of warning though, always have breath mints because people get close trying to figure out if your lashes are real or not.
