I recently stopped into Big Al's Cafe in West Allis, and let me tell you, if you haven't been there yet, well you're just plain missing out! This cute cafe greets you as soon as you walk in the door not only with comfort and friendliness, but also with an aroma that doubles your hunger! It is very hard to find a restaurant where all the staff greets you at the door and seeing most of the customers already there laughing and sharing stories with the waitstaff. I cannot stress to you enough what a great little place this is!!!! Not only did the customers know their waitresses by name, the waitresses returned the favor noticeably taking the time to ask, even myself, my name and introduce themselves to me! I had the BEST service I can honestly say I have received in a long time, not to mention, the food was outstanding!!!! I laughed to myself as I watched my waitress and the owner of this adorable cafe, also the cook, joking around back and forth and including the customers as well. Not only was the experience great, but you really feel at home when you're seated in this cafe. The food is OUTSTANDING, the service is IMPECCABLE, and the customers are just as welcoming as the staff!!!! I recommend HIGHLY that you give this cafe a try. If you're feeling outgoing....try their breakfast challenge! If you're hungry but not that hungry, I recommend their outstanding omelet! And even if you're only a little hungry, they have meals for you too! A little bit of everything on the menu, mixed with a waitress with a great smile, some jokes or stories rolled in there too = A GREAT TIME!!!!! STOP IN NOW!!!! YOU'LL WONDER WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG!!!!

The Big Al's motto; "give folks what they want", is unbelievably true. Not just a catchy phrase! How do I know; I had Dental surgery was told, "no chewing for one week". I was told to drink Ensure or a protein drink; yuk! So when I took my wife to eat there and told them about my dilemma they said, "would you like SeaFood Gumbo soup or Chili". Thinking they were joking, I said "both". I could not believe it, one day after Gum surgery and the whole next week; I was enjoying delicious nutritious 'scratch made' soup, chili and mashed potatoes (flavored each day different); without chewing any solids. Go ahead, ask at George Webb or any other expensive average food, 'our way only' restaurant; if they will Puree their food. Then ask if their soup and chili is made each day in small scratch made batches. Better yet, when you order at any other restaurant ask them if your serving is going to be made from Scratch, not from a large batch made hours earlier. If you like Fish Fry, where can you go and be served Pan Fried or hand dipped Beer Battered, Lake Perch or Cod and the Tartar sauce ,Cole slaw and Potato pancakes are made daily from scratch. When you walk past the open kitchen you will not see plastic buckets filled with premixes. How many restaurants have a punch card, where you receive a free meal after 10 meals? I invite you to come and enjoy as we do, and as many other regulars do; where you get quality food prepared with love!
I've been to this place about 5 times, and not only is the coffee and food good, so is the discussion. Fuel is right in the nook of Riverwest and the ghetto of Milwaukee, so once you cross over, it's an entirely different world. You go from having (mainly) black people mean mugging you as you drive past to a world where race is irreverent, everyone is equal, and discussing how putrid and crooked our country can be as you inhale the secondhand smoke from the skinny, dirty-looking punk sitting next to you or inhale your own smoke. Either way, you're gonna get an earful and come back home opinionated, buzzed from the caffeine and nicotine or stuffed from the sandwiches, but generally feeling good about having been there.
