A year ago, I walked in to Commando Athletics after three years of being relatively sedentary and eating poorly. I was working out at a local CrossFit for a solid year before I moved to Virginia for medical school. During my 3 years, I joined different CrossFit gyms in the areas I was living, and I could not find a place that was a good fit. The energy in the gym was not inviting and it was about intimidation. It was already hard enough for me to motivate myself to let go of the books and go to the gym, so going to a place where people would make fun of me for wearing gloves, or not lifting as heavy as all the other athletes, made it less appealing. I eventually stopped going all together and slowly started packing on the pounds. I’m 5’1, I started medical school weighing 115 lbs, by the time I moved back home, I was 135 lbs and needed a major change in my life. I found Commando Athletics after doing a search of gyms in the area. I wanted a program that offered high intensity workouts along with lifting, since that was one of my favorite aspects of CrossFit. What appealed to me the most about Commando Athletics is the 8-to-1 ratio for their classes, as well as their emphasis on form. I called and made an appointment to meet Coach Carlos a few days after I moved back down to Miami. After my first meeting with Coach Carlos, I knew that Commando Athletics was the right fit for me. We went over my short-term goals, long-term goals, and we came up with a game plan to get there. He was very enthusiastic, down to Earth, and very knowledgeable in the areas of nutrition and physiology. I was beyond impressed. After signing up, I met with Coach Jenny. She was just as enthusiastic and knowledgeable as Coach Carlos. She had me go over some movements and try to establish a baseline fitness level. Needless to say, after a 3-year hiatus, I had fallen from grace. Coach Jenny assured me that I would get back to where I was, and then surpass it! And she was right!! After a year with Commando Athletics, and with the help of all the Coaches, I’ve made major strides in my fitness level, as well as leading a healthier lifestyle. With their nutritional guidance, I have made major improvements in the way I eat and I can see the changes in my body. I have definition in my legs, arms, and back. I’ve even started developing abs! I hadn’t seen these kinds of changes since I was in high school! My lean mass has been slowly increasing, while my fat percentage has decreased (from 39% to 34%). I’ve even doubled the amount of weight that I could lift! They’ve pushed me to be better and I couldn’t be more thankful to them for that. The workouts are all tough, but highly effective. I don’t need to go to the gym 5-6 times per week to get the results. Commando Athletics is one of a kind in their programming, as well as in their attention to form, nutrition and the complete well being of their athletes. The athletes are not just another body to fill their gym, they nurture, guide, and watch them flourish. I highly recommend Commando Athletics to anyone and everyone that is looking to improve their lives. They will accommodate you as necessary to suit your needs, making it easy for everyone to participate and get the results they’re looking for. They are one of a kind in this overly saturated city!!
When I go to Miami to see my clients which is at least twice per month....Do I work out at Shula's? Would the President fly in anything other than Air Force One? hEllO, of course if you're young and cute in Miami Lakes you work out at Shula's. Loved the gym! Great equipment, spacious workout floor and not crowded at all. The architecture is especially notable -- a cross between a hot club and MIMO 1958, though some may find it a little TOO clubbish and dark (like you expect to find a guy lounging on a banquette with a martini in his hand by the lat pulldown). Attractive -- very attractive -- crowd. I also got a great introductory deal. Seriously, this gym is as good as a gym can be, in my book. Super sexy and gorgeous interior, like no other gym you've ever seen. Top of the line equipment and unbelievable instructors. The trainers and pilates instructors I've had were all top notch and the place is so clean you could eat off of every surface in there.
