Macular Degeneration
Patients with mild myopia have a four-fold increase in the risk of retinal detachment. For those with moderate to severe myopia, the risk increases ten times. One study concluded that more than 50 percent of retinal detachments not related to trauma are associated with myopia. Other myopia risks include glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
Scleral lenses are used mainly to treat diseased and surgically altered corneas. Some conditions that are treated with scleral lenses include Dry Eye Syndrome, Keratoconus and corneal ectasias, Graft vs Host Disease- GVHD, Stevens Johnson Syndrome, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Post-LASIK, and Post- Corneal Transplant.

Other factors. Long-term use of contact lenses can be a factor in the development of dry eyes. Refractive eye surgeries, such as LASIK, cataract surgery, and PRK can decrease tear production and contribute to dry eyes.
