Business History
Conchita Espinosa opened the doors of Conchita Espinosa Academy (CEA) in Havana, Cuba in 1933. By 1959, what began as a musical kindergarten had become a K-8 school with 450+ students. Conchita's vision of education was formulated through her belief in the power of the arts to transform, enhance, and stimulate. She taught under the belief that every child had the right to an education in the arts, thus creating a curriculum that has been the basis of CEA for over 80 years. In 1963, CEA reopened in Miami. From the garage of her home, to the first campus in Little Havana, to the state-of-the-art 10-acre facility home to the school today, Conchita’s legacy has carried on for generations. Times and books have changed, technology has evolved, but the essence of CEA has always remained the same: a school that offers an excellent academic program, sophisticated arts education, a safe and nurturing environment, and fundamental human values.

MASTERY PROGRAM: To further implement our mission of bringing out the extraordinary in every child, CEA developed the Mastery Program, which assigns specific learning periods devoted to allowing students to explore and develop an area of passion. Throughout the Lower School years, emphasis is placed on discovering the wonders of the world and the special place each of us has. We encourage students to discover and cultivate an area of interest through our Mastery Program. Grades 3-5 Junior Mastery groups meet twice a week in multi-level groups to develop individual talents and interests. This yearly commitment to a specified area of study allows them to develop stronger skills, self-awareness, independence, and pride in personal accomplishments. Junior Mastery Groups include mathletes, Lego Robotics, art appreciation, civics, dance, music, cooking, and sports, among others. Grades 6-8 Senior Mastery groups are intensive. Students make a three-year commitment to an area of interest, talent, and ability. Mastery groups meet daily and allow students to ignite passions, pursue aspirations, and develop a proficiency in a chosen area of focus. Senior Mastery Groups include STEAM, Conchita Magazine, sports, Music Ensemble, choir, and theatre, among others. SPANISH PROGRAM: Reflective of CEA’s commitment to preparing the whole child for the world of tomorrow, educating students to be fully bilingual is a priority. The Spanish language program is based on conversation, quality literature, composition and grammar to promote acquisition, development, and fluency. It utilizes “best practices” methodology to ensure that students throughout the school becomes listeners, speakers, readers, and writers of Spanish. CEA benefits from a collaborative relationship with Spain’s Ministerio de Educación, Cultura, y Deporte. Each year “Auxiliares de Conversación” travel from Spain to work with the Academy’s existing Spanish language faculty, aiding and enhancing the program’s efforts to become truly bilingual. In 2015, the CEA offered a Cultural Immersion trip to Spain, for which select students who excelled academically and in Spanish dance or soccer were invited to participate. Spanish dancers had the opportunity to study with principal dancers from Ballet Nacional de España, as well as in renowned conservatories, including Conservatorio Carmen Amaya in Madrid and Conservatorio Antonio Ruiz Soler in Sevilla, where they performed alongside local dancers. Soccer players had the unique opportunity to learn from coaches from Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Seville Betys. They had private stadium tours and played several games against local soccer teams in their age group. DREAMS: Leaders for the 21st century must have the ability to communicate clearly, think critically, analyze and evaluate, and create and design all aspects of their lives. Our DREAMS classes (Dance, Religion, Español, Art, Music, and Sports) help us meet these goals for our children. Through the arts, students are afforded multiple opportunities to fine tune their judgment, create, and stretch their senses. In religion we address our needs as human beings to explore our spiritual selves. Sports allow students to strengthen their bodies
