This was the worst experience I have ever had at a Indian restaurant. Coming from a place of some of the best Indian reastaurants, I was craving for Indian food. I've been to the place twice before in the Fall, and it was'nt so bad. Note that there are very few choices that you have. Choosing Taj Mahal was my worst decision.
As we entered with our infants stroller, I was disappointed to find that they had changed the decor for worse. The seats have been changed to huge 'maharaja' style chairs that you would typically find at an Indian wedding. I can understand giving an Indian feel to the place, but you need to have ample space to add such bulky furniture. The place now seemed so cramped. We had to remove some chairs and rearrange inorder to get the stroller inside.
Finally we settled down. Within minutes my family including our infant were drenched in sweat. There was only one old window AC unit and 3 portable fans to the rescue. You have to take into consideration that this is NOLA...hot and humid. You CANNOT expect one window unit to suffice. Add the hot Indian food and it gets worse.
We decided to take a quick bite and escape. Alas, most of the trays with food were empty. We literally had to scrape food off the bottom of the trays. Within minutes a staff politely said ""Please take whatever food you need...buffet closes in 5 minutes"". Only there was NO food. What a shame.
I swore to never visit this or any other Indian restaurant in NOLA (I was told that the other restaurant Nirvana is also run by the same management). That leaves us with no other choice.
I respect the opinion of the other reviewers who have rated this restaurant better. But I would suggest them to visit any restaurant in Atlanta to know what good Indian food is.
