Dr. John W. Boyle IV, is a native of New Orleans, Dr. Boyle joined Gulf South Eye Associates in July 2008. He received his undergraduate degree from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia, and medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. After completing an internship in internal medicine there, Dr. Boyle completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis. He then completed a glaucoma fellowship in Memphis under Dr. Peter Netland, an internationally known glaucoma specialist.

Thyroid
People who have a condition called Sjögren’s syndrome will usually have dry eye. So will others with similar systemic diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or some types of thyroid disease. Also, people who take certain over-the-counter and prescription medications can have dry eye due to reduced tear secretion.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease, occurs when blood vessels in the retina change. Sometimes these vessels swell and leak fluid or even close off completely. In other cases, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina.

Ultrasound
If your ophthalmologist cannot see the retina because of vitreous hemorrhage, an ultrasound test may be done in the office. The ultrasound can “see” through the blood to determine if your retina has detached. If there is detachment near the macula, this often calls for prompt surgery.
