Laser Eye Surgery
Thanks to medical advancements and comprehensive research LASIK has revolutionized the way we are able to treat our patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure involves creating a microscopic surface flap of corneal tissue that is retracted back to make way for the laser treatment. Then an ultraviolet light beam begins to meticulously resurface the cornea and allow light to properly travel and refract from the retina. Eye Exam
It is recommended that adults under the age of 60 should have an eye exam every 2 to 3 years. Adults over 60 should see the doctor for an annual exam. If you wear corrective lenses, at any age, you should have your eyes examined once every year.

Dr. Sanjay Patel joined Heritage Eye Center in 1999 and developed Allen Ophthalmology in 2000. He has resided in Texas since 1978 and considers himself a Texan. He completed his undergraduate degrees at Southern Methodist University in 1990 and graduated with distinction of Magna Cum Laude. He then attended University of Texas Southwestern Medical School completing his doctorate of medicine in 1994. He then did his internship in internal medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center from 1994-1995. In 1995 he returned to Southwestern Medical School for specialty training in ophthalmology, and completed his surgical training in 1998.

Diabetic Retinopathy - This is an umbrella term that encompasses all disorders that affect the retina due to diabetic complications. These retinal problems occur due to damage to the retinal blood vessels causing leakage and bleeding from these vessels and can also lead to the retinal tissue becoming deprived of adequate oxygen.

Ultrasound
Laser assisted cataract surgery makes use of a femtosecond laser to make precise incisions onto the natural lens. This laser-assisted procedure is more customized for each patient’s corneal measurements, thanks to personal eye mapping and integrated optical coherence tomography (OCT). Additionally, the reduced amount of ultrasound power utilized during the surgery results in a quicker recovery when compared to traditional manual surgery.

Furthermore, Dr. Gilliland has developed a new surgical technique for the rehabilitation of thyroid eye disease and for small incision minimally invasive orbitotomies. He was the first to perform these techniques in the United States. Dr. Gilliland is a fellow of the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF OPHTHALMIC PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY and the AMERICAN ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY.
