My husband Larry and I were invited to go to Salem Baptist Church in July of 2009, but it seems like yesterday. As soon as we walked into the front of the church we were greeted by several church members who did not know us, but they extended their welcomes and made us both feel welcomed. We started with songs I had never heard before. I had in the past only heard the older more traditional Baptist music. I was a little uncomfortable with it, but I now listen to it on the radio in my truck and have learned to like it as much as the traditional music. Then Pastor Rick Statham went to the front and I was expecting what I had in the past (not understanding the King James Version). There is nothing wrong with it, but I understand the NIV better when I read it and anything we don’t understand we know Pastor Rick never minds explaining what things mean in terms we can understand. There have been several services where he would say do you know what (whatever he is talking about means, and if anyone says no, then he patiently explains it). At the end of his service Larry and I looked at each other and said this was going to be our church. Pastor Rick is a great preacher and does not mind laughing at himself. He will use his family or others in the church he knows won’t mind him using them as an example. That is when it really breaks it down for me. I was raised in the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home in Meansville Georgia for over 9 years and we were bussed to the First Baptist Church in Thomaston. I knew that I loved and believed in JESUS CHRIST, but did not understand how to give myself to him. In the span of a few minutes Pastor Rick explained it, and it was like the light went on in my head. The more we kept going there the more I knew I was ready to “EXCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS MY LORD AND SAVIOR”. I had not planned on committing myself to JESUS until I was sitting there on Sunday November 04, 2012 I found myself up front with Pastor Rick and told him I want to commit my life to JESUS CHRIST and I had never done so in the past and had never been baptized, because I felt unworthy. The next day was my 52 birthday, but that had nothing to do with it; it just helps me remember the date. I felt so alive and so much love and I felt my whole world had changed for the better. I was so happy in my heart; I just wanted to shout to the world of my new found love of JESUS CHRIST. Pastor Rick baptized me on Sunday December 09, 2012. I would like for anyone looking for a good church with a good Pastor and loving and kind members who accepted us with open arms to come one Sunday morning and see how they feel. I told Larry I hope Pastor Rick never decides to go to another church because we will have to follow him. We were living in McDonough when we first started to go to church at Salem. In June, 2012 we moved to Jackson Georgia. It is a longer drive but well worth it. We just have to allow ourselves more time for the traffic. PLEASE COME TO THE 8:30, 9:45, OR 11AM SERVICE. YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU CAME. MAY JESUS CHRIST BLESS YOU!
