Arthritis Treatment
One of the most common injuries to dogs' knees is tearing of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL). This ligament is similar to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in humans. There are two cruciate ligaments inside the knee: the cranial cruciate ligament and caudal cruciate ligament. They are called cruciate because they cross over each other inside the middle of the knee. When the CCL is torn or injured, the resulting instability damages the cartilage and surrounding bones and leads to osteoarthritis. Most dogs with this injury cannot walk normally and experience pain.

If your dog is at risk for cruciate ligament rupture, steps you can take to decrease the likelihood of injury include keeping your dog at a healthy weight and exercising him or her regularly. If your dog has already been diagnosed with an orthopedic health issue, such as patellar luxation, he or she may be more prone to cruciate ligament rupture. To further minimize risk of additional injury, we strongly recommend correcting any other orthopedic issues surgically as soon as possible.

Not only are there diseases and conditions caused by obesity, but also many others that are greatly exacerbated by the extra pounds. And the increase in costs can be alarming. In fact, treating pets with diabetes, heart disease or ligament tears that are caused by weakened joints can cost you thousands in veterinary fees. According to Petplan, pet insurance claims in 2011 for heart disease increased by 32 percent, diabetes by 253 percent and arthritis by a whopping 348 percent.

Dr. Chris Brader has practiced medicine at Matthews Animal Clinic since 2004. He purchased the clinic in 2017 with Drs. Pritchett and Thompson. A native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Dr. Brader attended Virginia Tech, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Biology in 1999. He continued his education at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and was awarded his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. He has a continuing education certification in ultrasound, and his professional interests include soft-tissue surgery, seizures and gastroenterology.

Matthews Animal Clinic is one of the few hospitals in the region with the ability to perform laser surgery. Laser surgery is a highly precise surgical technique that minimizes bleeding, reduces pain and swelling, promotes more rapid healing and greatly reduces the risk of infection.

When performing routine wellness examinations or diagnosing an illness, what our veterinarians can't see is as important, if not more important, that what they can see. Our in-house laboratory is equipped to perform a variety of diagnostic procedures for your pet, from blood counts and parasite identification to urinalysis and serum chemistries. These laboratory tests help us diagnose acute symptoms easily and accurately, reducing your pet's stress and discomfort during hospital visits.

We offer extensive dental care for pets, including dental scaling, polishing, tooth extractions and digital dental radiology. During a dental cleaning session, our veterinarians also will discuss with you how to best care for your pet's teeth at home.
Microchipping
Each year, millions of pets go missing and many never return to their homes. Microchipping your pet is a safe, easy way to increase the chances your best friend will make it back home safely should he or she become lost. A small microchip about the size of a grain of rice is implanted underneath your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Each microchip has a unique identification number that is linked to a national database with your contact information. The contact information can be updated any time, and it is important to remember to do so whenever your information changes. If your pet is lost, the microchip can be scanned by animal control officers, at shelters and at veterinary hospitals in the U.S. and in many foreign countries.

Spirit Craig was born and raised in Charlotte, NC. She began her grooming career at a cats-only grooming and boarding facility, owned by her aunt Carmen Craig, when she was 19 years old. She spent 3 years learning to groom cats under the wing of her beloved aunt. Once her aunt - who mainly focused on grooming dogs - became terminally ill, Spirit decided to learn how to groom dogs as well to continue Carmenâ€™s legacy. She spent two months at a dog grooming school in Waxhaw and then worked at the school for a year until she felt ready to move on. She joined the MAC family in August of 2021 and couldnâ€™t be happier to be here. She is set to be married to her fiancÃ©, Eric, in August 2022 and together they have two dogs, Ramsay and Habanero, and one cat, Quinn.

Small Animal Vet
Hannah joined the Matthews Animal Clinic team in May of 2019 as a nurse assistant. She is a recent graduate of Clemson University where she earned her bachelorâ€™s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biological Sciences. She plans to work at the clinic while she completes her applications for veterinary school in hopes of becoming a small animal veterinarian. She has a rescue three legged cat named Tara! In her free time she loves going to concerts, hanging out with friends, and cheering on the Tigers!
