General Info:
We have been operating ferry service to all points on Catalina Island, including Avalon, Two Harbors and private camps, since 2004. Our service was born out of frustration with LA traffic. Ron Hoffman, an avid sailor living near Marina Del Rey and one of the founders of the Catalina Marina del Rey Flyer, often took his boat to Catalina early to secure a good weekend mooring, then waited for his wife to arrive after work on Friday. On one too many occasions, Hoffman's wife called, saying she'd missed the last San Pedro or Long Beach ferry, stuck in the notorious I-405 traffic. With his wife on the mainland without a ride, Hoffman spent many a Friday night alone at Catalina. Out of frustration came opportunity. "Research told us, " comments Hoffman, "that a third of Catalina visitors, mostly Westside and San Fernando Valley residents, plus LA visitors staying near LAX, found the drive to San Pedro or Long Beach ferries excessively time consuming and frustrating. Yet it is their only option." The Hoffmans decided to take matters into their own hands, and shortly thereafter, the Catalina Marina del Rey Flyer began service. When Los Angeles traffic through the I-405 corridor made his wife miss the last ferry from San Pedro to Catalina Island, California, Ron Hoffman decided to buy the darned thing! An avid sailor living near Marina Del Rey, Hoffman will often sail his boat to Catalina early to secure a good weekend mooring and his wife would catch the ferry after knocking off work on Friday. After this occurred numerous times, it just got to be too much. Hoffman got angry enough to do some checking. Could he be the only one frustrated by the ferry's infrequent schedule? Could the traffic support a greater number of trips back and forth from San Pedro and Long Beach over to the island paradise? "Research told us that a third of Catalina visitors, mostly Westside and San Fernando Valley residents, plus LA visitors staying near LAX, found the drive to San Pedro or Long Beach ferries excessively time consuming and frustrating, " says Hoffman. "Yet it is their only option." The Hoffmans decided to take matters into their own hands. "We saw a better way, and invested in a Marina Del Rey-based ferry service. After their investment, Hoffman also accepted the CEO position at Catalina-Marina Del Rey Flyer during its startup years. After three years of leasing boats, the company came to commission a vessel to serve as a state-of-the-art passenger ferry. Hoffman comments, "The new vessel, Marina Flyer, is the first of its kind, constructed of light but strong aerospace materials. This stable, new hydrofoil-assisted catamaran is fast, efficiently powered by waterjets." Designed to store luggage on the main deck, rather than the hold, Marina Flyer's passengers carry their luggage right onto and off the boat. As a result, Catalina visitors can begin their precious vacation up to an hour quicker than competing services using conveyor unloading. "We can usually get a boat loaded or unloaded in less than ten minutes, " Hoffman mentions. Bikers and kayakers are delighted they can bring both aboard the Catalina Ferries for a minimal charge. The friendly crew assists on and off-loading recreation gear as well as luggage. The Catalina-Marina Del Rey Flyer now offers this stress-reducing alternative to the Westside and the Valley, and can eliminate the call, "Honey, I missed the ferry. I'm stuck on the 405 again!" Departing from Marina Del Rey spends an extra fifteen minutes on the water, but saves Westside Catalina visitors hassle, headaches and gridlock!

Excellent Customer Service

Recently I had the chance to use the services of the Catalina Marina Del Rey Flyer located at13737 Fiji Way, Ste C2, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292. While planning my first of many camping trips to Two Harbors with my two kids, a friend of mine happened to mention using Marina Del Rey Flyer. Having never gone before I was at a loss as to exactly how difficult the process of boating to the island with camping equipment migh... view more

Bait and switch

I purchased several prepaid certificates through a Living Social deal. When trying to book seats, I was told that there are no seats available on Saturday for more than 7 weeks. Seriously?\r \r They will, however, allow me to purchase premium seats for an almost 100% premium...\r \r Of course, I can book general seats online or call with no problems. Not cool.

MOST CONVENIENT WAY TO GET TO CATALINA

I thought going to Catalina meant an entire day of travelling by the time you go to the ferry, parked, boarded, etc etc. I was wrong. The Catalina Marina Del Rey Flyer is super easy and convenient. It's located right in Marina Del Rey so it takes no time at all to get there. You park your car in a parking lot with ample parking and about a 10 second walk to the flyer. You board on time and there is plenty of seating.... view more

Definitely the way to go

Recently took the Flyer out to Catalina and back. A gorgeous weekend in August, you better believe we weren't the only ones heading out for a nice time. I noticed right away that the staff was professional, friendly and helpful, which really set the tone for the trip. I was impressed by how smoothly everything went; there wasn't your typical waiting about that I've come to expect with the transport of lots of people.... view more

How to miss the crowds to and from Catalina.

When taking a trip to Catalina, leaving from LA or LB can be a bit overwhelming with an almost LAX airport feel to the departure. The Catalina Marina Del Rey Flyer (CMDRF) comes closer to LAX only in its geographic proximity. CMDRF is located conveniently in the quaint Fisherman's Village of MDR. Parking was about 50 yards from the gangway to the vessel (if you park adjacent to the El Torito @ $8/day); very conven... view more

Great Weekend on Catalina

Took this ferry over to Catalina for the weekend - and had the best bloody mary of my life on board. You need to have one. Or five. Seriously, they were that good. We left about 5 minutes late but arrived a minute or two early. Not sure who that happened. Looked like a new boat, and was much smoother than the one I took over as a kid. Stayed at the Avalon and had a great time. A weekend is probably the perfect amount... view more

Fantastic Experience on the Marina Del Rey Flyer

What a treat it was to return from Catalina on the Marina del Rey Flyer. The staff, boat and experience was A+. We spent a few $ extra and sat upstairs in the ""Admirals"" Lounge. It was so nice to see the workings of the boat from a seat by the Captain. The Captain, Zac was very personable as were the rest of the crew. I would highly recommend this ferry. The location is much more convenient if you are traveli... view more

Great Service

The comments here that are bad are out of date. This company is small and has grown into a great way to get out to Catalina. They have different ownership than in 2007 and new captains that care about service. I've been using their service and also catalina express for years. I choose Marina Del Rey because I can take all of my camping gear out without worrying about wight or amount of bags like when I take the e... view more

Not that bad, dude

I've never written a review for citysearch before, but after the experience I had today with the Catalina Ferries and the Flyer, I felt compelled to. You see, I'd reserved some tickets the other day and then last night I decided to check out reviews of the company on City Search. I found it and read for horrendous reviews. If you've read them, you'll understand that I freaked out and thought I was copletely screwe... view more

Use another ferry service!!

This company is provides an inadequate service! I used their ferry service, before I saw their poor history on other websites, and it was a horrible experience! My return ferry was delayed over an hour b/c the stabilizer was broken, which explained the rough trip over. The worst part was that the stabilizer must not have been fixed properly b/c the return trip was soooo much worse. Everyone on the ferry was terri... view more
