I discussed the installation of a 3/4 HP submersible pump with the elder Mr. Jacobs on the phone. After describing my situation of needing a pump for an above ground cistern, Mr. Jacobs said he thought it would cost me about $900 for the entire job including pump and labor . I thought that was reasonable and scheduled the job for the following week. The following Tuesday, Mr. Jacobs' son came out and replaced the pump but instead of installing a 3/4 HP submersible pump, he installed a 1HP. Again, no big deal... I thought... until I got the final bill where I noticed Mr Jacobs' son, John, had charged me $1,820 including $1,200 for the 1 HP pump, $350 for the pump tech component, $30 for a pressure switch and $240 for the service. I researched the most expensive 1HP submersible pumps online and could not find one that cost more than $600. I called Mr. Jacobs today to discuss the big variance between what we discussed and what his son actually charged me. Rather than standing on his word concerning the quote, it was obvious that he had to discuss the issue with his son because he had to call me back. Upon calling back, he went on to explain how his pump is all stainless steel and is the best on the market with a 4-year warranty. In addition, he suggested that I was basically buying a good name since he has 62-years of experience and insurance in case he has to come out for any service calls. Hey...the bottom line is that I just asked for a pump and for someone to install it. I didn't necessarily need someone with vast experience to install a simple pump in my cistern nor did I necessarily need an insurance policy. These things were not discussed and were certainly unexpected. I really feel like Mr. Jacobs' gouged me on the cost. Lesson learned - don't take an estimate on the phone and when you do get one, make sure it is detailed enough to disclose the kind of details Mr. Jacobs hid from me in our first conversation.
