- Based in Mammoth Spring, Ark., The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is a bureau within the Department of the Interior. The organization offers a variety of services, such as enforcing federal wildlife laws, protection of endangered species, managing migratory birds and restoration of nationally significant fisheries. It also conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands and others. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manage the 150 million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System of more than 551 National Wildlife Refuges. It also manages thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas. The Bureau of Fisheries and the Bureau of Biological Survey consolidated into one agency to be known as the Fish and Wildlife Service as per 1940 reorganization plan (54 Stat. 1232) in the Department of the Interior.
