Dental Examination
X-rays
The radiation exposure from standard digital dental X-rays is very minimal. One bitewing X-ray (the standard X-ray to check for cavities between the back teeth) is approximately 0.001 mSv of radiation. To put this into perspective, a 3.5-hour plane ride is estimated to expose an individual to ~0.01 mSv of radiation, or 10 times the amount of a bitewing X-ray. A standard medical chest X-ray is ~0.1mSv, or 100 times the exposure of a bitewing; and a chest CT scan is ~7 mSv, or 7000 times the exposure. In one year, the average American is exposed to approximately 3.1 mSv in background radiation from the sun and other sources. To put that statistic into perspective, the average bitewing X-ray is approximately one 3000th of your annual natural exposure.

Fluoride Treatment
Dental Sealants
A dental sealant is a protective coating placed on the back most teeth that contain developmental grooves and fissures. The sealant material fills in those grooves, making the biting surface flat instead of fissured. After receiving sealants, these teeth are more easily cleansable and less likely to decay, as food is no longer able to get stuck in the grooves. Sealants are so effective in preventing decay that most insurances Kids First Pediatric Dentistry is in network with cover them 100% every three years! A recent study published in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Journal showed that sealants on permanent molar teeth reduced the risk of cavities by 80%!
Space Maintainers
When children receive extractions of posterior primary teeth earlier than natural exfoliation, it may be appropriate for our dentists to create a space maintainer appliance. Such appliances help “maintain” the space that was previously held by the primary tooth so the permanent successor has ample room to grow into the mouth when ready. Without space maintainers, the permanent molars may drift forward, closing the space necessary for the future permanent tooth. Reversing the space closure down the road with orthodontics can be both costly and time consuming.

Fillings
At Kids First Pediatric Dentistry, we use only tooth-colored, mercury-free fillings. Although there have been no scientific studies showing a causal relationship between amalgam fillings (the silver metal fillings containing mercury) and any health ailments, we believe that a mercury-free mouth is always best. Other advantages of composite fillings include improved esthetics and chemical adhesion that allows the dentist to be more conservative when removing decayed tooth structure.
Crowns
When cavities are deep enough, extending to the nerve of the tooth, pulp therapy may be indicated to alleviate pain and properly restore the tooth. In our office, our dentists perform several different types of pulp therapy on primary teeth, depending on the severity of the decay. In some cases, a full coverage crown may be appropriate after pulp therapy to protect the structural integrity of the tooth.

Root Canal Treatment
Considering those statistics, we truly believe the benefits from taking annual bitewing X-rays greatly outweighs the risks associated with avoiding them. Avoiding X-rays for extended periods of time can lead to undiagnosed cavities in between the teeth that are not visible upon clinical examination. These undiagnosed cavities can and will get larger over time. When diagnosed at a much later stage, these teeth will be more problematic, often resulting in root canals, crowns, abscesses, and extractions.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Tooth Extractions
There are many scenarios when a dental extraction may be necessary. These range from over retention of primary teeth, non-restorable decayed teeth, abscesses, or requests from an orthodontist to create additional space for erupting permanent teeth. When extracting teeth at Kids First Pediatric Dentistry, we take special care to make the process as easy as possible. In doing so, we use certain psychology techniques to ease your child’s anxiety, and also may use sedation dentistry when appropriate. Orthodontics
During such residencies, doctors receive advanced training in restorative treatment specific to primary dentition, behavior management, child psychology, growth and development, hospital dentistry, interceptive orthodontics, sedation, special needs patients, and techniques to alleviate anxiety and build trust with both patients and their parents.
