The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, also known as SEC, is responsible for the protection of investors, as well as facilitates capital formation. Established in 1934, it oversees the working of investment advisors and securities exchanges, brokers and dealers. The commission discloses market-related information. It works in association with state security regulators, self-regulatory and private sector organizations, and the federal departments and agencies. The commission has a staff of more than 3,000 people. It administers corporation finance, investment management and enforcement divisions. The commission s Division of Trading and Markets is responsible for maintaining fair, orderly and efficient markets. It also administers the offices of economic analysis, international affairs, investor education and advocacy, and compliance inspections and examinations. The commission s Office of Public Documents answers the public requests for information.
