CAUTION: Deliberate Overcharge on Take Out Bill

I live two miles away. They charged me $2 delivery charge and then another $2 delivery charge and thought I wouldn't notice. I paid up because I was starving. Ordered there 6 times before. Last time I ordered in fact, I cancelled the order two minutes after placing it. They gave me a bunch of grief about it. Fooled twice..... If they rip their repeat customers off like this, I would be careful about all other aspects... view more

Love this place

The propaganda movies are awesome. I have eaten here alone on several occasions and watched the movies...really something to see. The food is really good, although the waiters are not always the most attentive. Order the onion pancakes...yummy

The best Chinese food in West Hollywood

I was studying late with a friend and we both became hungry at 10:00 pm. I went through a bunch of delivery menus and found MAO*s KITCHEN. My friend and I dissected the menu and decided on the Lettuce Cup for $9.00. The chicken is fresh, chopped up with vegetables including jicama, carrots, greenbeans all in a savory rich healthy sauce. Highly recommend it. I selected the Mao's Hometown with shrimp - $11.00 as my mai... view more

Got a flyer on the door in the Mid-Wilshire district. Called in a delivery on a Sat nite, was told it would take an hour and the total would be $34 for $26 worth of food off the menu. Decided to pick up the order and save the delivery fee (and time). Called back to change the order and was told it would be ready in 30 min .\r \r Upon arrival the food was ready but still billed at the delivered rate. I asked about the... view more

Could this be the best Chinese west of San Gabriel?

OK, getting past the poor choice for a name, this food is surprisingly good and an even better value -- a great combo in these budget conscious times. Lunch deal is incredible bargain. Everything tastes fresh and homemade, right down to the hot and sour soup which has tofu, wood ear mushrooms and other veggies in it -- gives it a nice depth of flavor. Even a dish like the Salt and Pepper Seafood transcends the oily, ... view more

Kristallnacht stuffed cabbage, anyone?

To understand how revolting the Mao's kitchen menu is, just imagine seeing the following menu in a Jewish delicatessen: Auschwitz roast beef sandwich, Warsaw pastrami, corned beef, Rye bread platter, Crematorium Smoked Salmon, Dr. Joseph Mengele Cream cheese, Goebbels Motzoh ball soup, Kristallnacht stuffed cabbage. In glorifying Mao, the mass murderer who murdered over 70 million of his own people, Mao's kitchen's o... view more

here is the deal:

My friend used to work here. The food is great. The staff is great. It's hot all hell in the summer and the kitchen is clean but the clients are dirty hippies. Again, the fod is great and that's the most important thing!

Yummy Chinese!

Visited this simple, but delicious Melrose spot on Xmas eve, before heading down the street for some improv. I'm generally not one for chinese food at all; it's been ages since I've had any. But went to Mao's on a friend's recommendation, and was not disappointed. Pretty affordable, I had the lettuce wraps with chicken - there was a TON of food! I also had a pork appetizer from the specials menu, and enjoyed both tho... view more

Terrible service

Wow. The service was so spacey. The food took forever, and we were served our entrees in spurts. The food was fine, but out of seven entrees at our table, four were served cold. And I mean freezing cold. My friend thought her plate of lo mein had come from the fridge. And they didn't offer to remake the dishes-- we had to ask specifically. And the dishes were back in 2 minutes, so I am sure they were thrown in the mi... view more

Great veggie-friendly Asian food!

This quiet sister of the original rowdy Mao's in Venice is always nearly empty. I don't know why, as the ambiance is nicer for a calm dinner and they have comfy booths. The food is the same price as well. Nearly everything is easily made vegetarian, and the prices are reasonable, as you can often share a dish. Their homemade ginger ale is the best to drink! Highly suggest the scallion pancake and the model citizen so... view more
