General Info:
Quinn Hatfield's deft touch in the kitchen shines through on his short but dead-on, market-fresh menu. Appetizers are playful: Fabulously fleshy charred octopus is offset by a citrus-candied orange rind, and an updated croque madame features fresh hamachi, along with proscuitto, quail egg and out-of-this-world brioche. Main courses are uniformly excellent, be it juicy pan-roasted seabass, meaty duck breast that eats like a steak, and luscious, mint-crusted rack of lamb. For desserts, Karen Hatfield outdoes herself with the molten-centered house specialty chocolate peanut butter truffle cake, which is worth every decadent calorie its name promises.

Outstanding Halibut

This is the best restaurant I've tried in the last year. You can tell the difference when you have a chef-driven restaurant. And at Hatfield's you can watch them cook through through open kitchen.

The restaurant is a bit formal, so it's more of an adult atmosphere. When you sit down they give a crab amuse-bouche, extremely tasty. They have a great halibut and a nice rack of lamb. The desserts are also special, with beignets the highlight. The beignets come with a root beer shake which is fantastic.

I'd highly recommend giving Hatfield's a try.

Good tasting menu

Their tasting menu has more substance than Providence's. But Providence is better.

Best deal in town

I have been a fan of Hatfields for a while especially since my husband and I live right around the corner. We were in last night to celebrate our anniversary and to our suprise they had just started some kind of special spring pre fixed menu. Any appetizer, entree and dessert for $49. Are you kidding me? When you consider the amazing bread , Amuse Bouche and cupcakes with your check this has got to be the best deal in town.

Amazing food, great service

After hearing all of the rumors about Hatfields and missing my previous opportunity to go, my boyfriend and I finally made it in. I thought the food was nothing short of amazing. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and happy to explain the elements of the dishes without making me feel stupid (as some often do!) We started out with the mackerel and the chef's take on the ""croque madame"". Both were superb and my only complaint is that there wasn't more. My boyfriend had the lamb and I had the market menu skirt steak and we were practically licking our plates clean. I didn't care too much for the bread, but the desserts were really yummy!! I'm planning to bring my parents when they come into town, but I would definitely recommend sitting on the patio as the inside gets pretty loud. All in all, we had a wonderful time.

Less is More in a Bad Way

Hatfield's in West Hollywood a few blocks from the Grove on Beverly is another in a long line of California cuisine at its skimpiest, priciest and most self-conscious.

The gimmick of this converted closet is that most of the ingredients - particularly the veggies - come from the Farmer's Market down the street. A terrific idea, if those ingredients were put to use in a simple way that allowed the flavors to stand on their own free-range merit.

Instead the chef over-indulges all ingredients with such a flurry of butters, creams and seasonings that you're merely left gasping for more ice waterto scrape the salt lick that has become your tongue.

Leslie and I sampled two appetizers. The supposedly ""charred"" Japanese mackerel was spongy and more gamey that mackerel you'd order off a sushi menu. The pineapple and avacado slices could barely mask the muskiness of the fish.

We also ordered the Kabocha squash agnolloti with fresh purple eyed peas, sherry brown butter and armentizia cheese. Thank god we split the already tiny portion, as the brown butter soup was over-whelimingly rich and the peas too al dente; so the textures missed the mark.

Of the half dozen entree selections, we decided to split one, opting for the sauteed wild striped bass,
with wild mushroom, leek and cauliflower fricassee, creamy spaetzle and some things call ""champagne grapes."" The fish was nicely prepared with its crispy seared skin concealing the buttery flesh. With a fish already so delicately rich, the unctuous spaetzle and cauliflower fricasse which was basically buttery mashed califlower were gratituous and overwhelming. The chef simply doesn't know when to say when with his flavor combinations.

With tiny appetizers scraping $20 and paltry entrees in the mid to high $30s, I suppose the restaurant feels that less really should be more.

The service is friendly and polite. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. But there are far better ways to spend $100 on dinner for two.

Skip it, go to A.O.C instead

Since my review seems to have disappeared..... here we go again.

Went there on a Saturday with six friends to celebrate a Birthday. The waitress was extremely curt and seemed annoyed at our presence. She made the one vegetarian person at the table feel extremely uncomfortable by suggesting that it was a faux pas for him to be there.

The food was blah.. totally forgettable.

Waiter never came by the table to check on us, even though the restaurant was half empty at this time of night.. and to make it worst she forgot the birthday dessert......

Felt cheated out of my money.

Great date spot

Since I am one to try things first before knocking it, I decided to take my date here even after reading negative reviews about the quality of the food and service. It was superb! A little treasure in this big city. We were seated at an intimate table and never felt rushed the entire meal. The food was fresh and unpretentious. This is a must see!!!

a gem of a place

We met friends here for an early Saturday night dinner, and I was apprehensive after reading some negative reviews here about the quality of the food and service - one reviewer lamented being brought their check with their dessert. But I was very pleasantly surprised by both the service and food - we were given a great table and were not rushed in the least and we found the menu to be bold, unpretentious, and not overwhelming. Our waiter was attentive and pleasant, the food was excellent (especially the Croque Madame appetizer) and the ambience was understated and very comfortable and attractive. It did seem to be getting crowded as we were leaving (at around 9pm) so I would recommend coming early if you want an exceptionally peaceful dining experience. Don't skip dessert.
