Despite being early in her career, Dr. Varma has sought to establish herself both locally and nationally in the Otolaryngology community. She has served as vice-chair of the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center/Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital Otolaryngology department. She is also on the Executive Committee for the Orange County Society of Head and Neck Surgery, working to further the education of the Otolaryngologists in her community. Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Varma received her osteopathic medicine doctorate from Touro University – College of Osteopathic Medicine. She went on to complete her Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery residency through Michigan State University. She was then accepted into the prestigious Pediatric Otolaryngology fellowship McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, in Canada where she received training in surgical treatment for chronic ear infections, endoscopic and open airway reconstruction, and specialized speech and swallowing disorders. She moved back home to Southern California five years ago and has since been caring for both children and adults with a wide variety of ear, nose, and throat problems, including minimally invasive surgery to treat obstructive salivary gland disorders.
Ear Surgery
In most cases, it’s a far better option. Children can’t have ear surgery until their cartilage stiffens sufficiently, which often isn’t until around age five or six. In the meantime, your child could experience poor self-confidence.

Usually, salivary gland tumors require surgery, which can vary from partial salivary gland removal to full tumor and lymph node removal, followed by reconstructive surgery. You may also need chemotherapy, radiation, and radiosensitizer drugs.

These treatments can be self-administered and do not necessarily need to be based on an accurate diagnosis. Examples include the use of over the counter medications such as antihistamine creams and steroid creams for eczema and antihistamine pills for nasal symptoms that include rhinitis. More serious conditions can be treated with inhalers for asthma, skin creams for eczema and auto injectors for anaphylaxis resulting from, among other causes, insect bites, without having identified whether the condition is truly an allergy.
