Crowns
Before placing a crown on a tooth that has been weakened by decay or is cracked, broken or severely worn down, your dentist may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for a crown-lengthening procedure to ensure that enough of the tooth’s structure is available to securely hold a crown.
Bridges
Fixed bridges – This type of bridge is generally made of porcelain or composite material and is anchored (cemented) permanently to a natural teeth adjacent to the missing tooth site. The benefit of this type of bridge is that it is fixed (not removable) and it is very sturdy. The disadvantage is that in order to create a fixed appliance, two healthy, natural teeth will have to be crowned (capped) to hold the bridge in place.

Root Canal Treatment
After a root canal, if one or more of the tooth’s roots becomes infected – or there is significant bone loss around the tooth – your dentist may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for a hemisection or root amputation. During a hemisection, your surgeon removes one half of the tooth, leaving a serviceable one-rooted tooth. The term root amputation refers to the surgical removal of one root of a tooth with multiple roots.
Apicoectomy
While most root canals are successful, there are times when a root canal alone isn’t sufficient. If the infection from the dead nerve inside a tooth spreads beyond the tooth root and into the surrounding bone, your dentist may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for an apicoectomy. During an apicoectomy, the surgeon removes the infected portion of the tooth’s root in order to clean the infection from the tooth and surrounding bone and then fills the root to prevent future infections.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Gingivitis, an inflammation of the gum tissue surrounding the teeth, is caused by bacteria that – if left unchecked – may lead to periodontitis. A gingivectomy surgically removes diseased or excess gum tissue and the bacteria that can cause periodontitis.

Dentures
Dentures – This type of tooth replacement is used when most or all of the natural teeth are missing in one dental arch. Dentures are removable artificial teeth that are made to closely resemble the patients’ original teeth.

Dental Implants
Dental implant surgery is, of course, surgery – and is best performed by a trained surgeon. Your oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) has the specialized education and training in the complexities of the bone, skin, muscles and nerves involved to ensure you get the best possible results. A 2014 study suggests greater implant success rates when performed by a dental specialist.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
: This condition often follows oral surgery and is generally temporary, lasting from a few days to a few weeks. In rare cases, it may last for an extended period.
Jaw Surgery
Corrective jaw surgery – also called orthognathic surgery – is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) to correct a wide range of minor and major skeletal and dental irregularities, including the misalignment of jaws and teeth. Surgery can improve breathing, chewing and speaking. While the patient’s appearance may be dramatically enhanced as a result of the surgery, orthognathic surgery is performed to correct functional problems.
Maxillofacial Surgery
These short procedures are minimally-invasive ways to enhance your facial appearance without surgery and with minimal downtime. Even though many places utilize non-doctors (nurses or estheticians) for these procedures, in our office, only the licensed surgeons perform all, even non-surgical facial aesthetic procedures. Our surgeons are board-certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or American Board of Aesthetic Medicine or hold Elective Cosmetic Surgery Permit. So rest assured that all your treatment will be provided by specialist expert doctors.
Tooth Extractions
You may need to have a tooth extracted for a number of reasons, such as decay, injury or as part of orthodontic treatment. Whatever the reason, you will most likely be referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) who will remove your tooth in the office using an anesthetic that is appropriate for your procedure.
Bone Grafting
Tilting of the posterior implants avoids the need for time-consuming bone grafting procedures, while immediate loading shortens time-to-teeth.

Orthodontics
Your dentist, orthodontist and OMS will work together to determine whether you are a candidate for orthognathic surgery. The oral and maxillofacial surgeon determines which corrective jaw surgical procedure is appropriate and performs the actual surgery. It is important to understand that your treatment, which will probably include orthodontics before and after surgery, may take several years to complete. Your OMS and orthodontist understand this is a long-term commitment for you and your family, and they will try to realistically estimate the time required for your treatment.
Braces
It is not uncommon for teeth other than wisdom teeth to be impacted (or blocked) from entering the mouth. Fortunately, many of these teeth can be brought into proper position rather than removed. By working together, your oral and maxillofacial surgeon and orthodontist can often bring the impacted tooth through the gum and into the correct position through a procedure known as expose and bond. The OMS will expose the impacted tooth and bond an orthodontic bracket and chain to the tooth. This bracket will then be connected to the patient’s braces. The patient’s orthodontist will then work to gradually bring the tooth into the proper position – resulting in a beautiful, healthy smile.
