Dr. Merchant is a board certified clinical health psychologist. She is licensed in Kentucky, West Virginia, Mississippi and Indiana. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Boston University and her Masters and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Chicago Medical School. She completed a clinical and health psychology internship at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center and a postdoctoral fellowship in primary care psychology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is one of the first systems in the body to experience the consequences of stress. Some people have particularly sensitive intestinal systems and/or have developed disorders like Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It is important to know that stress can make GI symptoms worse or more difficult to manage. Additionally, living with chronic and unpredictable GI symptoms can be stressful and affect work, family, romantic relationships, and one’s overall quality of life.

Frequently, patients with chronic pelvic pain have experienced pain for years and been seen by dozens of doctors and specialists in an attempt to understand and treat their symptoms. Once a patient has been in pain for this long, the nerve pathways that transmit pain often become sensitized (a process called central sensitization), and the patient’s symptoms become increasingly complex with a mix of pain symptoms, anxiety, low mood, poor sleep and fatigue. When symptoms are severe, individuals may be unable to participate in social or leisure activities, find it difficult to continue working, and experience a loss of intimacy in their relationships, which ultimately compounds their suffering. Contributing to feelings of isolation and distress is that chronic pelvic pain is often seen as a taboo topic, not suitable for easy conversation with coworkers, family, or friends.

Treatment for headaches includes relaxation training, EMG and thermal biofeedback, stress management, headache management, cognitive behavioral treatment, and cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia. Since there is no cure for migraines, the goal is to improve the management of the symptoms by reducing the frequency and severity of headaches. Treatment usually involves 4-5 sessions of individual therapy and biofeedback (30 minutes each) lasting over the course of about 6-8 weeks.
