Hips are one of the most common joints requiring replacement to achieve pain reduction and restored movement. Most commonly, hips are damaged by arthritis from degeneration (osteoarthritis), autoimmune disease (rheumatoid arthritis) or traumatic-injury-related arthritis. In all cases, the cartilage cushioning the hip wears away, leaving bone to grind against bone, causing pain, stiffness and instability. Less frequently, hip damage is caused by insufficient blood flow to the area due to dislocation, fracture or disease, or by childhood hip disease.

Discontinue all blood thinning and Aspirin products 7 – 10 days prior to surgery. You will need to contact your primary care doctor for instructions for this, as well as instructions to continue taking routine medications or to miss a dose the morning of surgery (examples include: insulin, blood pressure pills, or heart medication).

Magnetic resonance imaging – MRI provides crisp images of both bones and soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves/nerve roots. MRI can help your doctor identify inflammation, infection, tumors, abscesses and impinged nerves.

Computed tomography – CT (referral) provides a three-dimensional view of the spine and related bones. It can offer more detailed imaging than X-ray, and can be especially helpful in diagnosing disc herniation, stenosis, tumors/cysts and other problems.

General Surgery
Sciatica
Acute low back pain is most often caused by tight or strained muscles and ligaments, injured facet joints, osteoarthritis, disc herniation or degeneration, and spinal stenosis. Symptoms can range from abnormal stiffness and backache to spasms and sharp, shooting pain that may travel through the buttocks and hips and down into the legs (sciatica). In less common cases, acute back pain is caused by benign or malignant tumors, infection, fracture, or a rare but serious disease known as cauda equina syndrome, a disorder of the nerve roots at the base of the spine. These less common causes need to be treated quickly in order to prevent serious, often permanent, damage to the lumbar spine.
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a specialized procedure used to view, diagnose and treat joint disease and malfunction. An orthopaedic surgeon makes a small incision to allow the insertion of an arthroscope, a narrow tube-shaped instrument connected to a video camera that illuminates and magnifies the intricate structures within and surrounding the joints. It allows the surgeon to examine the damage in and around the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle or wrist on a video screen.

Joint Replacement
Shoulder joint replacement utilizes titanium and ceramic prostheses and plastic joint liners to replace the damaged parts of the shoulder joint and restore normal, healthy function. Shoulder replacement comes with a variety of options, so you and your surgeon should review them to decide which is most appropriate for your particular case. Total shoulder replacement typically involves replacing the damaged glenoid socket with a plastic prosthesis, and installing a medical-grade metal ball that rotates smoothly in and around the new socket.

Arthroscopic surgery typically involves less pain, trauma, infection risk and recovery time than traditional (a.k.a. “open”) surgery, and is frequently done as an outpatient procedure, meaning that even though it is still performed under general, local or spinal anesthesia in a hospital or outpatient surgical center, the patient can usually return home the same day. Therefore, arthroscopy can be a superior option for patients whose conditions do not require open surgery.

Anterior Approach Hip Replacement – This revolutionary procedure involves a specialized table that allows your surgeon to enter the hip joint from the front, requiring less intrusion into tissues and dramatically faster healing. Because the shoulder has a wider range of motion than other joints, it is more vulnerable to different types of injury. Shoulder pain, weakness and stiffness that aren’t sufficiently relieved by anti-inflammatory medications, injections or physical therapy can be treated with surgery, including rotator cuff repair, bone spur removal, ligament repair, removal of detached cartilage, labrum removal or repair, shoulder dislocation treatment and damaged biceps tendon repair. The type of surgery you may need depends on your injury and what you and your surgeon decide would be most beneficial in your case.
