University Medical Center is positioned to become the state’s center of excellence in cardiovascular care. While UMC has offered award-winning cardiovascular care for decades, we expect this service line to play a key role in our ongoing success as a health care system in the coming years. As we like to do in Las Vegas, UMC is doubling down and betting on the continued growth of our Cardiology and Stroke Center. We’ve made strategic investments in valuable capital improvement projects, revolutionary clinical technology upgrades and enhanced business development initiatives. This includes a large-scale remodel of our cardiovascular care infrastructure, building additional cardiac catheterization laboratories, introducing expanded electrophysiology services, renovating existing labs, developing a hybrid cath/surgical suite and outfitting all of these clinical areas with state-of-the-art equipment. We also continue to focus on building a comprehensive structural heart program.

Primary Care
It can be difficult to use PAP therapy during illness, due to nasal congestion, coughing or sneezing. It may be OK to not use your machine for a night or two.Â Contact your primary care provider or your sleep provider if you are concerned about your breathing at night, or you are not sleeping well.Â Â
Emergency Care
If you are having shortness of breath, contact your provider.Â If you go to hospital or to urgent care, bring you PAP device with you.

Ophthalmologists

Glaucoma
Beta blockers are available by prescription only. They can be taken through pills, injections, or eye drops (for glaucoma) and are often prescribed in combination with other drugs such as diuretics or calcium channel blockers.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Alan Steljes attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where he completed his B.S in Biology. He earned his MD at University of Toronto, and completed his residency at University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, followed by two additional residencies in cardiology and interventional cardiology. Dr. Steljes then served appointments as both Chief Resident of Cardiology and Chief Resident of Internal Medicine at the University of Alberta. He has practiced at multiple clinics, including as Chief of Cardiology at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Henderson, Nevada, and Chief of Staff at Boulder City Hospital in Boulder City, Nevada. Since 2004 he has had his own practice in Henderson, Nevada.Â

Nuclear Medicine
Dr. Mock was certified from the American Board of Medicine in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease in 1995 and received certification from the Board of Nuclear Medicine in 2008. He is the former president of the Nevada affiliate of the American Heart Association.
Computed Tomography
Dr. Steljes has multiple board certifications across a variety of disciplines, including Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Nuclear Cardiology, Echocardiography, Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and Sleep Medicine. He is an active member of the American Medical Association, the Clark County Medical Association and the America College of Cardiology. He is also a licensed pilot and certified scuba diver. In his spare time, he enjoys tennis, hiking and hanging out with his family.
