Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the internal pressure in your eyes increases enough to damage the nerve fibers in your optic nerve and cause vision loss. The increase in pressure happens when the passages that normally allow fluid in your eyes to drain become clogged or blocked. The reasons that the passages become blocked are not known.
Ophthalmology
Is an ophthalmologist with extensive surgical experience and training. He provides comprehensive eye care for both children and adults and performs a wide variety of surgical procedures with special interest in advanced cataract surgery, corneal surgery and laser vision correction. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina for both undergraduate and medical school and his residency was completed at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Gonzalez completed a fellowship in Cornea/Refractive Surgery at the University of Missouri. He is a member of several professional organizations and is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Special interests include: Laser Vision Correction (Z-LASIK), advanced cataract surgery with multi-focal implants and advanced corneal surgery (including DSEK and other corneal transplants).
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in America. It results from changes to the macula, a portion of the retina that is responsible for clear, sharp vision, and is located at the back of the eye. Most people with macular degeneration have the dry form, for which there is no known treatment. The less common wet form may respond to laser procedures, if diagnosed and treated early.

Cataracts
A cataract is a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye. Depending on its size and location, it can interfere with normal vision. Most cataracts develop in persons over age 55, but they occasionally occur in infants and young children. Usually people develop cataracts in both eyes, but one eye may have somewhat worse vision than the other.
Cataract Surgery
An intraocular lens (or IOL) is a tiny, artificial lens for the eye. It replaces the eye’s natural lens that is removed during cataract surgery. The lens bends (refracts) light rays that enter the eye, helping you to see. Your lens should be clear. But if you have a cataract, your lens has become cloudy. Things look blurry, hazy or less colorful with a cataract. Cataract surgery removes this cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear IOL to improve your vision.
