We tried Jack Mackerel's last night for the first time, and decided we would not be back. \r \r The service was good but slow. Our server was obviously new, but friendly and kept our drinks filled. To not be a busy night, the staff seemed unorganized. \r \r I ordered their supposedly ""award winning"" seafood chowder. It was obviously not fresh. In the bowl the top of the chowder was cold and thick and the bottom hot and more creamy. Looked to me like it was old and microwaved. I did see some crab and clams, I could not tell if there were any other seafoods in the chowder. I found it no better than the better canned chowders. \r \r My fried shrimp platter was good and a large portion. The slaw was good too.\r \r My spouse ordered the special which was a surf and turf. The steak was ordered Medium-Well. It was Medium at best and unevenly cooked - it was cooked longer on 1 side than the other. We did not send it back because we have heard too many stories about food sent back to the kitchen. His shrimp were large shrimp that were butterflied, they had a good flavor but were a little over cooked and tough.\r \r My 5-year old daughter got the fried shrimp and she was happy. I was shocked when the bill came to see the kid's milk was $2.50. I did overhear another table asking about different sides for the kid's meals besides fries. The only option was a mixed steamed veggies. The server said they would not do a salad, or select steamed veggies, or mashed potatoes. \r \r One kind of surprising thing was they served rolls instead of the typical hushpuppies. \r \r We did not complain to the manager, so the disappointment is partly our fault, but a restaurant that obviously does the large turn-over they do should have their act together. There are better seafood restaurants that serve properly cooked food.

Jack Mackerel's has terrific food. Prices are what you would expect at a good restaurant, with a nice atmosphere. It's only 1 block from the ocean, they have outside patio dining, which is great on warm summer days. Jack Mackerel's always has signature foods discounted throughout the week, along with other specials/discounts. If you are lookin for THE BEST clam chowder in town, go to the 3 consecutive year winners of the annual chowder cook-off! You won't regret it.
