Knoxville Gastrointestinal Specialists have been offering state of the art care to the people of East Tennessee for over 20 years. We strive to provide superior consultative and endoscopic services in a pleasant and comfortable environment. Our expertise includes the entire spectrum of gastrointestinal and liver disease, including colon cancer screening. In addition, we are on active staff at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, where we offer inpatient consultative services. All of our physicians are board certified in Gastorenterology and Internal Medicine.
Gastroenterology
Dr. Jeffrey Brown is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He earned his B.S. degree with honors from the University of Miami (Fla.) in 1976 and received a M.S. Degree in Medical Physiology from Ohio State University in 1978. He attended the Medical College of Ohio (Toledo) where he received his Medical Degree in 1981. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society at that time. He completed his internship and residency at Akron General Medical Center, where he served an additional year as Chief Resident. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of South Florida in 1987.
Colon Cancer
His interests include the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic gastrointestinal illnesses, colon cancer prevention and endoscopic procedures. Dr. Iqbal and his wife, Farzana, are proud parents of twins. He enjoys music and photography.
Endoscopy
Upper GI endoscopy helps in diagnosing and treating esophagitis, heartburn, ulcers, and bleeding. Upper GI endoscopy, sometimes called EGD, is the visual examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract using a lighted flexible endoscope. It is performed in the outpatient setting and utilizes intravenous sedation to relax the patient. The endoscope is inserted through the mouth into the esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, and the upper part of the small intestine. The exam takes about 5-10 minutes. There is no pain and patients seldom remember the procedure. Sometimes, mild throat irritation occurs after the exam. The physician may take a biopsy during this exam. If there is narrowing of the esophagus, a dilation (stretching) may be done.
