Primary Care
In some cases, you may need a referral from your primary care doctor to be eligible for insurance coverage. Please be sure that your insurance information is up-to-date and that you are eligible for coverage. We will be happy to review your coverage with you.
Emergency Care
If you have a sudden new eye problem, especially if you have had recent eye surgery, it is important to see an eye specialist promptly. After hours and on weekends, you can reach our “doctor on call” by calling the “Physicians Exchange” at 524-2575. From the neighbor island, you can call the Exchange toll free at 1-800-360-2575. If you have trouble finding an eye specialist available, you should visit a nearby emergency room.

Glaucoma
We’ll be happy to answer your questions about glaucoma. Don’t let glaucoma steal your eyesight. Have regular eye exams. You’re at higher risk for glaucoma if you have a family member with glaucoma or if you’re over age 50. We provide services and treatments for glaucoma at our eye centers in Wahiawa, Hawaii and Waipahu, Hawaii. Hawaiian Eye Center wants you to know that glaucoma is capable of robbing you of your vision before you even know you have a problem. Most glaucoma doesn’t hurt, but it does lead to irreversible vision loss over time. So we recommend regular eye examinations for everyone.
Ophthalmology
Terry Wood, M.D. graduated from the University of Washington and completed his medical school at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He pursued his ophthalmology residency at Oregon Health Sciences University where he also completed a fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology. In addition, Dr. Wood completed another fellowship in Medical Retina at UCLA. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and practices comprehensive ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
Most laser treatments do not hurt. Treatments for macular degeneration and for diabetic macular edema do not hurt. Usually, only numbing drops are necessary prior to the treatment. If more extensive laser treatment is done for bleeding from diabetes, a numbing injection is often given to prevent eye pain. What Will the Doctor Do to Examine the Retina?

Cataracts
There is a lens inside the eye which helps us to focus light and see clearly. A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which can blur vision. Cataracts are more common in those over age 60, but can occur at any age. As a cataract develops, it causes worsening vision.

Eye Exam
Subconjunctival hemorrhage is a common condition, especially as we get older, in which there is a small amount of bleeding on the surface of the eye. Because a small amount of blood under the clear tissue that covers the eye looks very red, many people are quite frightened by this. However, it is harmless and you know that this is the problem when the eye looks blood red and doesn’t feel or see any differently than usual. These generally heal themselves on their own within one to two weeks. They can come from coughing, straining, or sneezing. If due to an injury, a thorough eye examination must be done to be sure there is no other injury to the eye.

One of the most effective (and tastiest!) ways to maintain healthy vision is through a nutritious and balanced diet and a holistic lifestyle. This will give your eyes the nutrients and vitamins it needs to stimulate and maintain proper cell growth and function. A balanced diet will also help to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol in check which also helps to decrease your risk of developing eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy and visual degeneration.

Ultrasound
This test uses sound waves far above the range of hearing to explore the structures within and around the eye. If bleeding occurs that prevents visualization of the back of the eye, we can use the ultrasound to take a picture of the back of the eye so that the doctor can see it.
