We are also here for you when you have diseases such as diabetes or glaucoma. We will be with you every step of the way, following up to ensure your eyes are getting the treatment they need. If things are not progressing the way that they should, we will change the course of treatment.
Ophthalmology
If you are having vision problems, seeing spots, or dealing with anything else related to your eyes, we will perform a thorough examination to diagnose the problem. We will then outline our treatment recommendations. Often, all that is needed is a change to your glasses or contact lenses.
Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness among Americans age 65 and older. Lifestyle factors that can make macular degeneration more likely include hereditary factors, high blood pressure, smoking, lighter eye color and obesity. The macula is the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Macular degeneration can cause a loss of central vision and can make reading and seeing other small details very difficult. Somers Eye Center has advanced imaging technology which visualizes the macular microscopically to detect early changes that the human eye cannot see.
Laser Eye Surgery
It is our practice to refer our customers at eyeSmith to excellent eye doctors. One such doctor is Audrey Blacklock, ophthalmologist. Not only does Dr. Blacklock provide a most thorough and accurate eye exam, she possesses a very pleasant personality and takes the time necessary to ensure all is perfect. As we have seen the results with her patients, her skills in ophthalmology including eye surgery are unsurpassed. The Northland is fortunate to have Dr. Blacklock located in North Kansas City. Not only is Dr. Blackock an M.D., but she also holds a Ph.D. in Physiology.
Cataracts
Most cataracts develop slowly, eventually impairing vision and interfering with daily activities like driving, reading and watching tv.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Risks are much lower and recovery is much faster when surgery is done early; no need to wait until your vision is very poor.

We have a qualified team of professionals that will work around your busy schedule and address any questions or concerns prior to the appointment. Whether it’s a general eye exam or treating a condition that requires an in depth diagnosis, our team provides undivided attention to each patient so we can evaluate a plan based on your needs and our professional opinion. Our doctor offers full vision examinations and will diagnose and treat an array of eye diseases and conditions to keep your eyes healthy!

Internal Medicine
Dr. Blacklock is a board certified ophthalmologist who joined Somers Eye Center in 2020 after practicing for many years in the Northland and Kansas City metro. She received her medical degree from Kansas University School of Medicine where she completed a combined M.D.-Ph.D. program for physicians with interests in clinical care of patients as well as research. Her Ph.D. work was in Physiology. She then completed an Internal Medicine internship with the University of Washington School of Medicine at the Boise, Idaho Veteran’s Administration Hospital. This was followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis. Dr. Blacklock provided eye care in Wichita and Hutchinson, Kansas, prior to returning to Kansas City.

Diabetic Retinopathy
High blood sugar can damage blood vessels in the eye causing impaired vision and even loss of sight. In its early stages, no symptoms may occur or a mild change of vision such as difficulty reading or double vision are noticeable. Annual eye exams are an important part of a diabetic treatment plan.

Radiology
When you get services from an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, certain providers there may be out-of-network. In these cases, the most those providers may bill you is your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount. This applies to emergency medicine, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, laboratory, neonatology, assistant surgeon, hospitalist, or intensivist services. These providers can’t balance bill you and may not ask you to give up your protections not to be balance billed. If you get other services at these in-network facilities, out-of-network providers can’t balance bill you, unless you give written consent and give up your protections.
