If your insurance requires a referral, please be sure to obtain one from your primary care physician before coming for your appointment. Your examination will begin by meeting with one of our certified medical technicians who will complete a history of your eye problems and general health. Eye Exam
Diabetes can affect your vision by causing a variety of eye diseases. It is important as a diabetic, that you do your best to control your blood pressure and blood glucose. This will minimize the risk of developing diabetic ocular complications. It is also important that an eye exam should be performed at least once a year or as soon as any potential problems are detected in order to ensure early detection of any serious conditions. Early detection is the strongest protection against diabetic eye diseases.

Donald C. Falgoust, M.D. received his Bachelor of Science from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He received his medical degree from LSU Medical School in New Orleans. After an Internal Medicine Internship at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; Dr. Falgoust completed Ophthalmology Residency at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, which included extensive clinical training at John Hopkins Hospital. His specialized training includes cataract and laser eye surgery, treatment of glaucoma, macula degeneration, diabetic eye care, as well as preventative medicine with routine eye exams for glasses and contact lenses.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic Retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness among adults. Approximately 25% of current diabetics have some form of the disease. The risk of developing Diabetic Retinopathy increases with the age of the diabetic person and the duration of the disease. It is estimated that 90% of diabetics may experience some form of Diabetic Retinopathy over the course of their life. With only a small percentage of those developing Diabetic Retinopathy, some have serious vision problems and even a smaller percentage become blind.

Ultrasound
A comprehensive eye examination is the best the best tool to protect yourself from the progression of Diabetic Retinopathy. Viewing the retina with instruments which illuminate and magnify the structures of the eye can help to detect the disease. If found, fluorescent angiography is used to determine the extent of blood vessel leakage. A series of photographs are taken as a dye travels through the retinal vessels. In many cases, ultrasound equipment may also be used to check for a detached retina.

Ulcer
Entropion is an inward turning of the eyelid margin and appendages such that the pilosebaceous unit and mucocutaneous junction are directed posterior towards the globe. It is one of the most common eyelid malpositions. Entropion can cause corneal and conjunctival damage leading to corneal stromal abrasion, scarring, corneal thinning and corneal neovascularization. In advanced cases, there can be risk of corneal ulcer and perforation.
