At the Citrus Memorial Heart Center we are committed to taking the health of the community to heart. Our mission is to improve the health and quality of life of the people and communities we serve by offering a responsive, coordinated continuum of services in a professional, caring environment. Our heart surgeons and anesthesiologists are from the noted "Ocala Heart Institute." Our Cardiac Catheterization Lab features two high-tech cath suites, digital cardiac imaging, diagnostic and interventional procedures (balloon angioplasty, stents), pacemaker and AICD (automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator) insertions and generator changes. We also treat cardiac disease and peripheral vascular diseases, often eliminating the need for open-heart surgeries such as acute coronary bypass. The Cardiovascular Operating Room and Cardiovascular Recovery Room are dedicated to the observation and care of open-heart patients. The Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit is utilized to closely monitor patients needing telemetry after cardiac catheterization or cardiac surgical procedures. In each of these areas, our dedicated and compassionate staff will treat you like family and provide exceptional care to help keep your heart healthy. Since 2004, the Heart Center at Citrus Memorial has performed over 1,800 open heart surgeries and over 10,000 catheterizations.

You may be surprised to find the most advanced medical research and trials taking place in your own back yard. The Citrus Memorial Heart Center is known for our commitment to staying at the forefront of techniques and procedures to heal the community. Citrus Memorial's participation in research and clinical trials keeps us on the forefront of medical innovation. With studies such as the SAPPHIRE WW study which provides the opportunity to implant carotid artery stents - a stainless mesh tube is implanted without a surgical incision in selected patients. Another study is the Variation In Recovery: Role of Gender on Outcomes of Young AMI Patients (VIRGO) which involves 2,000 young women who have had a heart attack, and 1,000 men as a comparison group. We examine predictors of a broad range of early and one-year outcomes including demographic, lifestyle, psychosocial, clinical, physical, biochemical and hormonal characteristics, as well as genetic risk factors and processes of care. These are just a few of the many exciting research opportunities we are taking part in to improve the health of our community.
