1919 Brothers William Howard and Joseph Hampton Flowers open Flowers Baking Co. in Thomasville, Ga. The local newspaper at the time said the bakery had “the latest and most sanitary machinery” and could produce 30,000 loaves of bread per day. 1944 Flowers Baking Co. becomes the sixth bakery in the U.S. to franchise the Sunbeam brand and Little Miss Sunbeam for its white bread. 1968 Flowers Baking Co. makes initial public offering and becomes Flowers Industries. 1977 Introduces the Nature’s Own brand of soft variety bread 1982 Lists on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol FLO 1983 Introduces the Cobblestone Mill brand of specialty breads and rolls 1991 Enters frozen foodservice dessert market with a frozen pie acquisition 1996 Acquires Keebler Foods through a joint venture; acquires Mrs. Smith’s frozen dessert brand; introduces Mi Casa brand of tortillas. 1998 Acquires additional shares of Keebler, gaining majority ownership 1999 First commercial wholesale baker to introduce a sugar-free bread—Nature’s Own Sugar Free 2001 Flowers Industries sells Keebler investment to Kellogg. Remaining business units—Flowers Bakeries and Mrs. Smith’s Bakeries—are spun off into a new company called Flowers Foods. 2002 Flowers Foods restructures its company into three business units—Flowers Bakeries, Flowers Snack, and Mrs. Smith’s Bakeries. 2003 Sells Mrs. Smith’s frozen dessert business to The Schwan Food Co. Company restructures into two operating groups—the Bakeries Group and the Specialty Group. Flowers becomes first commercial wholesale baker to introduce a bread lower in carbohydrates—Nature’s Own Healthline Wheat ‘n Fiber Bread. 2006 Acquires Derst Baking Co. in Savannah, Ga.; introduces new logos and packaging for Nature's Own and Cobblestone Mill brands. 2007 Opens Product Innovation Center in Thomasville to house marketing and R&D staffs; Nature's Own celebrates 30th anniversary. 2008 Flowers Foods realigns operating structure under Flowers Bakeries. The Bakeries Group becomes the DSD (direct store delivery) Segment and the Specialty Group becomes the Warehouse Segment. Introduces a line of breakfast items under Nature's Own. 2009 Flowers begins expanding its presence in the tortilla market with the acquisition of tortilla maker Leo's Foods in Ft. Worth, Texas. 2010 Introduces Nature's Own Sandwich Rounds. 2011 Acquires Tasty Baking Co. with bakeries in Philadelphia and Oxford, Pa.
