I've been a loyal customer for the past 9 years. I've had Ethiopian food in every major city, tried all the others in Seattle and there is no comparison. Hands down great food and great people. If you go in around noon they'll have a coffee ceremony with the strongest house brewed/roasted coffee you'll ever have. The variety of food is great too. They have vegan dishes as well as beef, lamb, fish and chicken. One order is big enough for two adults , but you can get a half-order if you're dining alone. All their food is full of flavor nothing served is bland at all. You can also get things cooked to your preference, they are relly good about accomadating their customers. I highly reccommend Assimba, they are the best!

I am an Ethiopian food fan. I have tried a lot of Ethiopian restaurants and I must say Assimba is the best. Their Assimba combo has everything, vegies, lentils, and meat. The owners are very personable. Of course, the decor can be improved, but who cares when the food is so good.

Assimba is the BEST ETHIOPIAN PLACE IN THE CITY!!! I am from Ethiopia so I know how the food is supposed top taste. The injera is perfectly fermented to give it that slightly sour tast its supposed to have. All of the dishes (i've had all of them and all are excellent) are given in half or full portions which is great if you are dining alone. They also have various Ethiopian beverages like honey wine (when available) ethiopian beers and spiced tea. (I love the tea). The owners Meseret and Messelu are always there so you'll have any questions anwered. All I have to say is whenever I'm homesick all I have to do is go to Assimba.

Delicious cheap food

We've been going to Assimba for 14 years and have never been disappointed with anything we've ordered. The Vegetarian tray includes a spicy salad, lentils, yellow peas, kale, potatoes and carrots and injera for about $7 and feeds two hungry people. For the more adventurous carnivore, order the Kitfo raw-chopped beef seasoned with yberbere and doused in clarified butter-ohmigod, it's so decadent. Stop eating before you're full because the food seems to expand in your stomach.The injera is fully fermented to a deliciously sour goodness unlike other ethopian restaurants that don't fully ferment their injera batter.

not my favorite Ethiopian

I haven't had Ethiopian food at many restaurants, but Assimba definitely was not my favorite. In fact I was pretty disappointed with it when I came here. The sponge bread tasted really sour to me, and I wasn't really very impressed with the other things they served. I think there are better Ethiopian restaurants in the area.

I should begin by saying that the reason for my low rating has a lot to do with my experience here relative to other Ethiopian restaurants that are within close walking distance of Assimba. The food isn't terrible, but I really wasn't impressed - Cafe Selam which is right across the street is my favorite. The Ethiopian drinks, as another post mentioned, are great, though! Ethiopian beer as well as honey wine are both highly recommended.

Yes, we have no honey wine

The best part about dining at Assimba is the honey wine. It's become something of a game to bet on what the server will say when asked for honey wine or "tej". The server will either: 1) stare blankly and repeat, "Honey wine?" as if there's no such thing; 2) without hesitation, say some variation of, "We do not serve honey wine"; 3) pause before saying, "Let me ask" before walking off; or 4) Ask if you want the carafe or bottle. I've gotten all four responses from the same waitress on separate visits. Better still is the actual "reveal" of the honey wine. Various incarnations include qualities from the following list: 1) crisp and tart; 2) slightly carbonated; 3) rich and dark gold in color; or 4) milky and sweet. This all makes sense if you get the bottle and see that the wine comes with a reusable screw-on cap. That said, the tej is still good, albeit sometimes reminiscent of my college attempts to replicate the taste with chardonnay and honey.Prices are very reasonable. The food comes in generous portions, with one veggie combo and one meat combo being enough to satisfy four with fairly hearty appetites. For larger parties, add dishes like the tender and buttery lamb tibs. Gored gored is good if you like very saucy dishes. The injera is thick, spongy, and just the right flavor and they sometimes give you extra without charging for it.Kudos to you if you are seated in the front, as that room seems to be reserved for Ethiopian men and hard-core punk rockers.
