    good place to work out

    Posted by guycrv on 07/25/2009

I belong to the Tacoma All Star. I have found it to be a good place to work out. I did not read all of the contract when I signed it. I thought I was signing up on a month to month basis, & found out when I tried to discontinue after two months that it was a one year agreement. I offered to pay the difference between the month to month rate and the annual monthly rate to offset All Stars loss and my offer was refused. The contract is binding. Oh, I forgot to mention, I also signed up for my son because he is unemployed right now, thinking that it would be a good place to bring my grandchildren. So, I will honor the contract and continue to pay what I owe --approx. $700.00 for the remaining 10 months. My reason for writing this is to advise anyone thinking of joining to READ the fine print before signing the contract.

Like all relationships, we had our ups and downs.

    Posted by Kase on 06/25/2009

UPDATE: Allstar has a new COO who saw my review and took the time to contact me. She and the manager worked to find a mutually satisfactory resolution to my concerns. I think everyone agrees it shouldn't take a Yelp review to get great customer service, and I'm optimistic that the management of Allstar will have more freedom to use their own discretion when addressing customer related issues in the future. Given the responsiveness of the team at Allstar I am increasing my original rating to match their effort. Original comments: I most often went to the branch in the Municipal Tower on 5th and Columbia. I joined this particular gym because of the pool, which ended up often being busy, even at 8:30 pm. However, they do have a sauna and steam room which saved me money on spas over the winter. They close at 10 pm during the week and 8 pm on weekends. I was surprised to find myself working out as late as 9 pm some nights, and wishing the gym would stay open 'til 11. I would not rejoin because of their accounting department and harsh policies. For example, my credit card was stolen and the bank issued me a new one. Allstar was charging my card, and the card number changed when it was reissued. Allstar charged me $20 bucks for the inconvenience I caused them when they tried to charge a card that no longer existed. Trying to explain the situation or appeal to their humanity was thankless and offputting. A worse situation: I was on a year membership. I called the day it was supposed to end just to make sure they would stop debiting my account. The manager told me to put it in writing. It ended up looking to their accounting department like I was cancelling my membership, so they held me to their policy about giving 30 days notice prior to canceling, and went ahead and debited my account $54. The thing is, when I spoke to the manager he never told me that I would be charged for the month, so I stopped going to the gym, assuming the membership was over. Now I'm out the dues and a month of membership. I want to fight but feel hopeless after reading other people's experiences with Allstar in the past. Allstar dues seem a little higher than average to me, and while I'm reasonable enough to accept that policies are policies, I feel badly that the manager didn't disclose the policy at the time I "cancelled", so I at least could have used the last month of my membership.

    Good place to work out

    Posted by CAWM on 05/19/2009

The gym is convenient, affordable and has everything you would hope to have in a gym. The staff is friendly and helpful. While some of the equipment needs upgrading, for the price and the location it is a great place to work out.

Improvements: Clean locker rooms more thoroughly. Don't let people store things long term in the lockers..

Closed Queen Anne Facilty & Didn't Offer Monthly Customers Anything

    Posted by danadeneve on 08/25/2008

Be weary of any Allstar location; they gave customers a one month notification (stated that this is all that they legally need to give) and closed their facility in August, 2008. Customers that paid initiation fees and monthly memberships were offered no proration in return. If you signed up in June, you'd be stuck with paying a whoping $571 for a two month membership. And being told tough luck by Allstar. Bad business practice to me, even if it is legal. Maybe you should ask them when their lease is up before you sign up for membership with them.

    All Star Fitness- Muni Tower

    Posted by aristotlelocke on 08/16/2006

This is by far the worst gym I have ever been a member of. First, they frequently fail to open on time and complaints to management are blown off. Instructors routinely fail to show up for class and/or are late. Cycling equipment is very poorly maintained if at all. Bikes sit around for months on end without repair. The facilities are beyond filthy and I wonder if any attemps are made to clean them at all- the women's locker room is just nasty with dust and who knows what clogging the ceiling vents and tiles. You are better off at any gym but this one.

    An okay gym

Posted by Jessica J. on 09/13/2005

I joined this gym because it is so close to my office. However, other than the location it doesn't have a lot going for it. The space is very small, so the equipment is really crammed in tightly. There is always a line to use the most popular pieces - treadmill, etc. The locker room is dingy at best. The worst part about this gym is that, as your membership gets close to the expiration date, you will get phone calls on a daily basis encouraging you to renew. I got calls at home, at work - it was a little much. All in all, if you work close by, it gets the job done. Otherwise, I can't recommend it.

Everything but the location is great

I went to the Key Tower location.Wonderful views, nice new equipment, a very nice pool, a helpful and friendly staff, nice locker rooms, good free weights, tons of cardio equip, a free towel service, free parking. That said, it's just a tough place to get to unless you live in or near downtown. I live in Ballard and the location was just too inconvenient. I appreciated the gym, but having somethign close is key in the motivation of getting there. Good gym though, overall quite a bargain.

    Downtown Gym

Posted by Douglas I. on 08/15/2005

allstar fitness has some great benefits, the have recently updated the equipment the views are spectacular and there is a huge pool inthe gym (on the 14th floor), the parking is free/validated after 4pm and the towels are provided and free to use without charge, you don't even need to bring you own padlock fo rthe lockers. drawbacks are the at the Men/s locker room could use a update to match the rest of the gym , not sure if this is in the works or not.
