    Run -- Don't Walk -- Away!

I took my son to Med Express on Sunday, November 8, 2009. He had an extremely sore throat, couldn't swallow and was talking funny. He hadn't slept for two nights due to the pain. He also had a white coating on his tongue. Med Express did a rapid strep test, which was negative. Dr. Land diagnosed my son with a sinus infection. (I was thinking he was a wimp complaining of a sore throat due to drainage from a sinus infection. Dr. Land prescribed an antibiotic. My son was unable to sleep Sunday night and continued to complain throughout that night and Monday that he was in pain. I called Med Express on Monday and expressed my concern that he wasn't feeling any relief. The doctor with whom I spoke (Martinuzzi, I think?) told me we had to be patient and allow the medication to work. No sleep Monday night either (4 days/nights without sleep). Tuesday morning we went to a doctor's office where my son was seen by a PHYSICIANS' ASSISTANT. She listened to the symptoms and performed a brief examination. She immediately diagnosed him with a THROAT ABSCESS, a potentially life-threatening condition. My son displayed all the symptoms of a throat abscess including what is called a "hot potato voice". She referred us to an ear, nose & throat specialist who lanced the abscess (a very painful but necessary procedure). There is no excuse for the misdiagnoses; the abscess was clearly visible by looking in his mouth AND they missed the mouth infection! He could have died as a result of the throat abscess, either through his airway being blocked or, if the abscess had burst into his carotid artery, all the bacteria would have gone into his blood stream and into his heart!

    Impressed

Last Friday when I picked my 18 month old son up from daycare, he was screaming and burning up. I decided to try out urgent care because my mother-in-law was talking about it recently. I was very impressed. The whole place was really classy and new, it didn't feel like a hospital or ER. It took me a couple of minutes to fill out the paperwork and insurance stuff and then we were called back real quick. The doctor and nurse were both really nice and treated my son's earache and gave him a little toy to calm him down. I expected to spend at least a couple hundred, but I didn't know my insurace had a co-pay for urgent care, it was only $40! I really liked it and will definatley go there again.
