For those who want an authentic experience in an historic landmark sans modern distractions, the Rose Island Lighthouse may be your idyllic getaway. You can either hop over on the ferry (or lobster boat, depending on the time of year) to visit for the day, stay overnight in the lighthouse or opt to be the lighthouse keeper for an entire week (keeper shifts switch every Sunday). Lighthouse keepers agree to perform daily duties, but fulfilling a participatory role is the whole thrill. Your efforts also help restore and pay for the landmark, which is overseen by the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundaton, a non-profit.
