poor film quality and NO REFUND OFFERED

    Posted by mcsoule on 05/30/2008

the film i watched was scratched up and there were lines dancing across the screen for most of the film. i went with friends who didn't care as much but i thought it looked terrible. as we were walking out i stopped and asked the manager to address the situation. he informed me that because i sat through the whole thing, i was ineligible for a refund. now i care about my movie-going experience and this isn't the first time i've had a poor one because of scratched or dirty film here. the place doesn't take good care of its films. which, in my opinion, is inexcusable if i'm going to pay $10.50 to see a movie. if other movie theaters can figure out how to show movies that aren't in bad shape, criterion can, too. shoddy, criterion. very shoddy.

    Different movie experience

I've never been to a movie theatre like the Criterion. They are located in downtown New Haven and they are fabulous. It is very clean and the entrance to the theatre has large collages of old fashioned movie stars. They have a bar in the theatre so you can make a night of it. Also...On the weekends they have "specialty" movie deals like Insomniac Theatre playing some cult films and older movies starting at 11:30pm, they also have Movies and Mimosas on Sunday mornings where they show older movies from the 1940's and on...

Sunday morning movies & mimosa - $4 classic movie and $2 mimosas! This is a beatiful theater, showing first run movies too. They have Sunday morning classic movies at 11:00, which are $5 or $4 if you sign up for the free criterion club card. They also show 11:30 pm cult classics on I believe Thursday & Friday, too late for me! It is easy to get to from 95, on Temple Street in New Haven. They validate parking if you don't want to park on the street, there is a garage across the street. You really can't beat the Sunday morning classic movies though, it's a great bargain and the seats fill up by 11:00, so get there ahead of time.

    Shiny new ghost town

This theater is badly attended. It only shows artsy flicks, which is perfect for me, but half the fun of going to a theater is all the other people laughing or screaming or crying or sighing or saying, "This movie sucks." The reason it's badly attended is because all the popular movies are shown in the suburbs. This is unacceptable.
