Swing and a miss?
Posted by stefanhajek on 05/27/2009
Just be careful what you order. The pizza's been good about 80% of the time. However, we ordered a white pie the other night and the spinach was clearly from a can or frozen. Not fresh in the least, which ruined the pizza altogether. I know times are tight, but fresh vegetables on a pizza are a no-brainer, especially if you're advertising such. I'll be trying out a few other joints because of this.

Good Cheap Salad & Sandwich
Posted by mkwku on 02/22/2009
Though I haven't tried a lot of things at Dagwood's, I do have to say they have a great avocado salad and tuna sandwich. If I am eating in the restaurant or have it delivered the quality is always great for those items.

Unique west side farea...and beer and wine too!
Posted by mackblueyes on 02/06/2009
DAGWOOD's has nothing to do with the comic strip.
The food is good all the time. However, it is unique to
this place. The pizza is not NYC ...it is Dagwood,s.
Same for the salads and subs. They have a flavor all their
own. Not bad, just a little different. The resteraunt is clean
and bright with both in and outdoor seating. There
is usually a sports program on inside. DAGWOOD"S
also serves wine and beer in bottles and on draft which
is a nice touch. I go there once every two or three months
for the last five years when I want a slight variation on pizza
and a beer. They also deliver. Worth a try if you are on the
West Side. Also a good place to eat with kids.

Never been treated worse!!!
Posted by PippyLong on 11/04/2008
Venice location is great...friendly staff, reliable food... the Santa Monica location...not so much! My fiance and I were treated so badly by the manager Zac. He not only screamed at us and accused us of lying but carried on to say that Dagwoods doesn't honor the customer is always right rule...no they "Keep it real"
Lets keep this real...when the owner gets back from Italy lets hope he finds out how Zac treats his local customers.

SLOOOOWWWW Service!
Posted by pizzalover22 on 03/04/2008
This was the slowest slice of pizza I ever had to wait for. And all I ordered was ONE SLICE OF CHEESE PIZZA! There were 4 people in the back working, and the restaurant (which wasn't all that nice for dining in) was not busy at all. I watched 2 people take bathroom breaks and go back to the kitchen. GROSS!!
I timed my slice of pizza, and it took 17 MINUTES for ONE SLICE! It was okay tasting considering it was just cheese with NO TOPPINGS.

solid pizzeria

Consistent, good food and a reasonable price. Highly recommended for good pizza, subs and salads.
one of the better places to get a good pie on the westside. Also one of the only places I know to actually sit down and eat a pizza in a decent setting.

Slowest Slice EVER
Posted by andthen2006 on 01/01/2007
Let me first say that these guys make some of the finest pizza in the LA area, I mean it is really good. I've never had their sandwiches, but the salads and desserts are also fantastic. The first time I went at lunch and ate in. Seemed to take a while to get my food. The second time I ordered a slice to go and timed it. One slice took 21 minutes. Twenty One Minutes. They weren't even busy.
I don't know what they are doing back there, but that long for a slice is ridiculous. Every single employee I saw took a cigarette break while I sat there staring at the counter waiting. The pizza is great, but I doubt I'll be back with service that unapologetically awful.

Great place to get a customized slice of pizza
Posted by rudette on 11/02/2006
You can get whatever you want - I like artichoke hearts, olives and tomatoes. Whatever combo you like you'll be very happy - they know what they're doing with pizza here. I'm from NYC where there's great pizza on every corner and here in LA there's just not. BUT Dagwood's comes pretty close to the NYC stuff. I wouldn't recommend their sandwiches, but go try their pizza.

New York Pizza!
Posted by moorebuzz on 09/24/2006
Ok... I'm from Brooklyn and I am very particular about my pizza's and calzones! I have searched everywhere and this is the closest I found to NY pizza. The sauce, the cheese, the crust is "almost" perfect. The calzones are also the closest you'll find. Made the real way with whole milk mozzarella and whole milk ricotta cheese. Now I've been here about a dozen times and only had 1 bad experience with the pizza which was a bit overcooked, but perhaps it was just a bad day. I still say they are the best for now. Now don't let the name Dagwoods fool you! I have been living in the neighborhood and drive by them everyday for the past few years and never ever thought of giving them a try. The restaurant looks too commercial! Then one day a friend of mine came over and offered to bring by a pizza pie from the neighborhood Dagwoods, and when we tried it... we almost flipped! Now I'm there everyweek. Try it New Yorkers! There is a particular taste NY pizza has and they got it down! Bingo!
