    Dishonest

Posted by Tony M on 09/02/2009

Without warning Peak closed its location in Winston-Salem. 2 days before closing down we were sent a letter informing us they filed for chapter 11 and included a coupon for a 2 month free trial membership. I was 11 months into a 3 year prepaid membership when they shut down. Don't join. Don't trust Peak. I only gave them 1 star because 0 was an option.

    Peak is over the hill!

I joined Spa Health club in 1990 as a "corporate member". When I left that job, Spa offered me a very nice Lifetime membership for a yearly low price. The contract was honored by Capitol Fitness and for a while by Peak Fitness. However, this year they said that the contract was void citing a NC law that prohibits fitness contracts over 3 yrs (to "protect the consumer"). I was never informed of this by the Club until one day when I checked in I was told that my membership had lapsed and that I needed to talk to a manager. The manager showed me a newspaper article about the NC law and proceeded to tell me about their new membership "deals" - all costing more than I had been paying. He did dangle a free 3 month extension if I joined within "a short time". I then went on vacation and when I returned a week later, the "special" was no longer available. I felt like I was being jerked around. On top of the non-disclosure about the "new policy" of renewing every 3 yrs, they said that they would not honor a Buddy Pass that I had bought last November for a year. It was to cover a friend who would work out the same time that you did. At the time my regular membership lapsed, I had 4 months left on the Buddy membership. They said that since my membership had expired before the other, that the Buddy membership was void. Funny, they never mentioned this when I bought it last November! I decided not to renew my membership because of this terrible and deceptive treatment as well as other incidents since they took over the club. The most annoying one was when they lost my accounts on their computer system when they upgraded. They made ME contact ABC Financial to prove that I had 2 accounts before I could use the facilities again. This took 3 weeks of emails and much frustration before I could use the gym again. So you can see why I chose not to renew.

All they want to do is squeeze more and more money out of you even to transfer a membership. I thought at first the gym was nice and a good place. Its like all they want is you to sign up and then they don't want to help you anymore. Called a lot of there locations and finally 1 person took the course on customer service and i got the corporate number 7048965521 but dont hold your breathe waiting for help from someon there either. bottom line not a good place

    Do not join Peak!

Lousy gym - once a great gym. I have been a member for probably nearly 20 years in Chapel Hill, beginning when it was Spa Health Club. Spa Health Club sold out to Capital Fitness who owned briefly. Then Peak Fitness took over. Since Peak has taken over the club in Chapel Hill, the standards have dropped very low. The equipment is nearly always broken (esp the magnets on the treadmills--always missing and thus, the treadmills do not work!); the gym is frequenlty out of soap and cleaning supplies; but WORSE.. they raised my rates AND they charged me a $50 processing fee for cashing my check to them! They say this is "corporate" but "Corporate" is elusive and no one will give out the phone number for "ABC Financial" aka "Corporate Peak Fitness." WORSE-- the air conditioning in the gym has been broken for a week... and it hasn been a sweltering 99 degrees! I can't even use my membership! When I phoned about the a/c, I was told-- "Well,t here is a dispute about who has to fix the air conditioning-- the property owner or Peak Fitness... so we don't know when it will be fixed." This gym appears to be going bankrupt. Their practices are unsavory and they are untruthful in their dealings. I'm not so sure they treat any of their employees well, either. Take my advice, don't join and pass the word on. Oh, and they've cut their "open 24 -hours, 7 days a week" to a lot less.

Be very aware of PEAK Fitness

    Posted by edrock on 02/17/2008

I joined Spa Health Clubs in 1986 and enjoyed my membership there for several years. They had branches in Asheville, Wilmington, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, and RTP. A couple of years back or so, they merged with Capital Fitness, who had one club in downtown Raleigh. Shortly thereafter, they sold to Peak Fitness, and the place has been run into the ground ever since. They closed the nice Durham location with pool, hot tub, sauna, and steam room, forcing patrons to go to an old Beyond Fitness location. It's filthy and in bad repair. There are plumbing leaks that have been patched with paper towels. The "upscale" laminate flooring is pieced together with gaps here and there. There's very little parking because the "independent contractor" "trainers" and other subcontracting business folks take up half the available spaces. Several of the aerobic machines are broken. Lights in the parking lot only work once in a while. It's a scary place. And rumor has it they are closing all their locations outside Charlotte.

    Impossible to reach

    Posted by SSim on 02/03/2008

I have been trying to cancel our Peak Fitness account since Summer of last year. They were under construction at the time and my wife signed up early when she worked in the area. Now they have finally finished construction 6 months later when they claimed it would only take two weeks and she doesn't work anywhere near there anymore. I have tried calling every conceivable number and even corporate and they can't get the account canceled they just tell us to call somewhere else. No ever answers the phone at the location she signed up for and the company that is drafting our account (ABC Financial) gave us another number for a location that never answers the phone. After trying to reach someone for over 6 months and calling every other day for the past month and no results I am left with no other recourse except to issue a stop payment with my bank. I may also file with the B B B if they are even listed with them. Their customer service is utterly dead.

    Beware!!

    Posted by Grace32 on 01/22/2008

I am a member of Peak Fitness and have read of them closing clubs in Raleigh while being the source of many complaints by the Attorney General's office but i am locked into a contract (my own fault). Today i was working out at the club in University when sheriff's walked in to serve them papers for not having paid their lease in 6 months. My friend works at the club and told me this was the reason. She is immediately looking for a new job and i am getting ready to look for a new gym like Lifestyle Family Fitness or Planet Fitness (just because it is so cheap). Don't join this gym.
