Far from the worst, it's also worlds away from being the best
Posted by SFTripper on 02/14/2008
The Social is arguably the most established live music club in the Orlando area, and has justifiably built a good reputation for bringing in upcoming national acts as well as showcasing the best in local talent.
The club has some good and bad points. The good is a decent (not great) PA, a decent sized stage for a club, and mostly good sight lines. The bad is a woefully inadequate lighting system, small and dirty restrooms, at times surly staff, and an unbearably inadequate air filtration system that allows the cigarette smoke to become chokingly thick.
On slower week nights, free onstreet parking is generally available within a few blocks, although crime has become serious enough that those can be a few very long blocks when leaving. Pay parking is available at a couple of lots within a block or two.
The bands that play there are a mix of everything from blues to metal, with regular leanings towards an alternative rock sound. Most are upcoming acts, a few are has beens on their way back down from the top.
Overall it's an OK rock club, nothing special and far from world-class. It lacks the unique atmosphere of Flint's "Machine Shop," the notoriety of LA's "Viper Room," or the high end production of NJ's "Starland Ballroom." It's best redeeming quality is that it is a live music venue in a city which has lost more of the same than it's gained in recent years.

age limit?
Posted by caroliya on 01/06/2008
My favorite bands play there but you have to be 18 or older to attend. It's not fair to all of my friends and i who want to attend concerts but can't because an age limit at the venue. house of blues has no age limit and it still serves alcohol, so i dont see why they cant let a younger audience attend.

Great concert atmosphere

Cool bar, surprisingly spacious due to high ceailings, and I like the pit/dance floor. The music is usually alternative/indie and they have some great bands that play. Great for after-work or just hanging out all night listening to some sweet tunes.

I loved the opening act for George Clinton the last time he was in town and I wish that The Brown Note were opening for them this time.

Small place but that makes it better

It is a small venue and that can be a bad thing since the shows sell out fast but as long as you get your tickets thats fine. Its worth it.Most other clubs won't let you get this close. You can get right up to the stage and get good interaction with other people there and the bands.Always a great place to be and great bands are usualy there. But if it is a more well known band be sure to get your tickets ASAP because otherwise it will sell out fast.

A Small Venue For Great Bands
Posted by Kayla A. on 06/26/2005
The Social is located in downtown Orlando and hosts all of the top name indie and punk bands. They have a decent-sized stage with steps leading down to the main floor so that you can rock out in front of your favorite band or hang back by the bar and still be able to see well. The drinks are fairly priced and there's a bar in the back that doesn't get as busy as the front one does. The staff is really friendly as well-- once when I ordered hot water (I didn't want to drink because I had a sore throat) the bartender offered to give me something that would clear it up and poured me a shot of Wild Turkey. Bands such as The Faint, Pinback, The Dead Kennedys, and Modest Mouse have played there.

Excellent for the "Un-commercial"

The Social is a great little lounge downtown. They always have great, unknown talent performing there. If your'e looking for great underground hip hop acts, rock bands, or whatever, then The Social is the place to be.

The New Scene
Posted by tatangl on 07/25/2002
The Social, or sapphire as the local still call it, is a great live music venue. On the other hand, their drink prices are rather higher than other average bars. The service is average, being a regular there does have its advantages though. The new look is nice but they took away alot of the spare moving room in the back, leave you not much choice to just go outside. Of course you could always just go next door to Bar-BQ-Bar for the cheap drinks!

Coolest place in town!!

Totally rad place to hang out. Best bands in town, best atmosphere, young people but, not like teenboppers also, definitely not a meat-market (good thing)...It' s an excellent place for socializing while viewing awsome live music, excellent bar... I love this place!!!
