To the person that said there are too many immigrants who don't appreciate "these types of things", what the **** are you talking about? One ignorant citizen is worse than a district filled with immigrants.This district would be nothing without immigrants.4 stars for the theater, by the way.

In the short time I went to theaters in San Francisco, this was one of the better ones. I didn't find many exception or real good ones so this might have been my favorite. Good service anyhow.

Great Old Fashioned Theatre

The decor of this movie theatre really sets the ambiance for a great night. The reasonably priced tickets, old pop-corn makers and double features create a wonderfull setting for movie viewing. Shows a great assortment of Independant movies.

Balboa Theater.

Balboa Theater is a great location if you're into independent movies and such. If you're tired of watching the same old summer blockbusters then this is probably a good place to visit.Prices are decent. The place has its own kind of charm to it. I enjoyed it a lot with my friends, i'm sure you will too.

Great prices for a diverse assortment of movies

I LOVE THE BALBOA!Sometimes they play double features of second run, usually independent, movies.And sometimes they have little mini-film festivals, like the Louis Malle one last week (I saw "Zazie dans le Metro")Always, they have:1) Cheap tickets = $8.50 for adults (and a bargain card: 5 movies for $30)2) A great newsletter - you can see it on their website or get it emailed. They give great descriptions of movies as well as info from reviewers. They're very enthusiastic.3) Nice snacks - fresh popped popcorn, good coffee and decent prices (whoa!)4) Decent street parking - I generally get a spot pretty quickly.

Great local theater

This is a great local theater that is virtually unchanged from the 1950's! You can just imagine how this part of SF was filled with regular cinema goers...nowadays it's filled with immigrants who don't appreciate these types of things...too bad, we need more to go here to keep it open, one of the last!!

Nice Alternative to Multiplex Chains

The last time I went there, it was only $6 for matinee features. They used to have double features for $5. I'm not sure if they have that anymore, from what I see on their website. They had independent films such as The House of Sand and Fog and Shattered Glass, and quality family films like Elf. The theatre is owned and managed by true film buffs with film backgrounds, and you can tell simply by looking at the care they put in the way the theatre looks - retro and historic. You can get in for free on your birthday.

Cheap double feature movie house

It's rare that you see double features any more, but it's one of the best reasons to go to the Balboa. Even if you only see one movie, it's still a bargain compared to the chain movie theaters. They tend to show more independent movies, but will occasionally show more mainstream fare. The theater is well run and the patrons are fellow movies lovers so the cell phone and talking factor are low. It's a bit of a trip if you don't live in the Richmond, but if you're looking to hide out for an evening, what better way than watching good movies.

Best Popcorn

Imagine if you will a movie house where you can see a double feature for the price of just one movie and the popcorn is real. This is the Balboa. Not always playing first run movies, they tend to have a lot of indie films as well as movies playing that have been out a while. There are a couple of good chinese restaurants out here, however, bring a jacket because it is always foggy.
