    Not Really A Spa

    Posted by notaspa on 11/12/2008

My 2 friends and I recently had treatments at Xanadu in Tucson. The employees although friendly and courteous do not have experience in how a spa treatment should be given. We all compared notes and each experience was somewhat diffferent even though we had all ordered the same package. For me the final straw was when the Vichy shower flooded my treatment room but the employee didn't feel the need to move me to a different room. She decided it would not be distracting to have her squish around on the wet floor during my massage. Equally distracting was the fact that she was never quiet and didn't edit any thought that entered her mind. Yes, I heard all the thoughts from "there is a lot of water on this floor I wonder if it's safe to turn the heat on for the massage bed" to "I wonder if this eye pillow is clean?" The massage that was supposed to be 30 minutes was barely 20. My scrub advertised to remove the dead skin layer was simply applied quickly like she was in a hurry to get to the next client, probably was since she seemed to be the only massage therapist working. This is really a case of the website looking very professional but when you enter the salon/spa you realize it is not. My friends and I all agreed on one thing, we all felt we were living some sort of Seinfeld episode.

Don't waste your time or money; DEFINITELY do NOT buy a gift certificate!

    Posted by rabs1016 on 09/03/2006

My husband suprised me w/ a gift certificate (GC) to Xanadu. I was unable to use the GC for a few months due to having surgery. When I was finally able to use the GC, I found out the GC expired after 6 months! In my experience,it is common for spas to honor GCs after the expiration date & most spas I have dealt with give you at least a year before a GC expires anyway! Well, not Xanadu. Even after I explained my situation, I was told I could only use the GC for 1/2 of it's value! Not wanting to waste the whole thing & thinking I'd speak to someone in person on the day of my treatments, I booked an appointment for a massage & a facial. I was told I could get the massage but only a "petite" facial -- GC was supposed to be for a massage, facial, manicure & pedicure! I have just returned from my treatments. Though they were okay, I was disappointed w/ the environment & the unprofessional atmosphere. My masseuse smelled of a mix of cigarettes, mints & perfume. She did not remind me to be sure to drink extra water throughout the day following my treatment (deep tissue massage releases toxins & it's important to drink a lot of water to help flush them out) She should not have assumed I know this; I find this irresponsible. The facial was very nice & the facialist/facial was professional & calming. My only complaint is that I was unable to get a deeper cleansing b/c of the whole "petite" facial thing. When I asked to speak to someone about the GC issue, the owner/manager was not there & no one there could help me. I still plan to speak to someone to get this rectified. GCs should not expire & certainly not after only 6 months -- the services have been paid for & should be received. I hope the facialist finds a job at a better spa worthy of her professionalism.
