Authentic asian with artistic flair
Posted by stevekathg on 02/14/2009
Another stop on our dinner of the month "club" with friends, and another big success. This is the first place I've been to that actually reminded me of dining experiences in China. In other words, don't expect anything sweet and sour, or dumbed down for midwestern blandness. That means that if you're not an adventurous eater, some of the smells, flavors, and ingredients might be a turn off. Unfortunately, that means you'd be missing truly extraordinary dishes. Even my wife, who isn't very adventurous, loved just about everything. The menu lists over 150 items, many of which include pictures. Descriptions were accurate, and the servers were very helpful. I was impressed with how she had memorized the entire menu numbering. Dishes were presented beautifully and service timing was perfect. When we finished the entrees, we weren't rushed on, but given enough time to digest a bit so that we could have dessert (which were awesome). Go with an open mind, and lots of friends so you can share many dishes.

This place is worth a try if you know what to order
Posted by mplsdiner on 05/05/2008
This is a good place i would recommend for casual dinner. Most items on their menus are good specially the fried rice and the rendang (beef brisket curry one of my favorites) and the char mee (noodles) I have tried their other curry like the green curry but it lacks depth and body, taste like any ordinary curry. Prices are reasonable and staff is warm and friendly. I dont recommend their drinks though (like the smoothies )specially if you're not familiar with asian textures and tastes.
Bottom line = Its worth a second or third visit for me sometime, good food (if you know what to order) good service and reasonably priced

Best Chicken Fried Rice I have ever had!
Posted by KALLIE17 on 02/24/2008
I am a VERY picky eater, and was very afraid to try most of the items on the menu, so I settled with Chicken Fried Rice. It is absolutely to die for! I have been back since, and I always order my fried rice. I have ventured out a bit and ordered some chicken dishes too. The chili chicken was good, even if it was a little spicier than I am used to. But by all means, the fried rice is the best I have ever had! My friends really like the coconut smoothies, but I couldn't get into that.

open on Christmas
Posted by peacereaper on 01/06/2008
My boyfriend and I went here on Christmas. We didn't have a problem with the service. My curry hotpot was good at first, but not great. It was too rich or something and made me develop a bit of a food intolerance to it after eating the leftovers. My boyfriend ordered something with a taro root(?) shell, and it seemed really thick and doughy, like it was undercooked. The outside crust of this shell was tasty though. It was a bit overpriced for what we got. I wouldn't seek out this place to eat again, but wouldn't avoid it either. I'd also order something different if there's a next time.

Consistent food and service quality

Great place, I like their Roti Canai and Ayam Rendang. I would suggest sticking to Malaysian food though their Indian curry is also reasonably good. The Chicken Satay is also nice. The place is very reasonable and our family loves going to this place once in a month or so. I have recommended several friends to this place as well.

Service was poor - not sure when I'll be back due to this
Posted by bunny_edelman on 03/31/2007
I have visited this place numerous times. The menu has tons of choices and each time I've tried something new, I've not been disappointed. The food is always very tasty. Now, when it comes to service, it's been all over the map. The other day I visited, it wasn't terribly busy and the service was the worst I've ever had. We ended up commenting to the management and now we are not sure when we'll be back there again, but when you spend hard-earned money and are forced to wait an excessively long time, you get served the wrong dish (the waiter didn't bother to write anything down, which is where the problem stemmed), and your bill is wrung up incorrectly, it doesn't compel you to go running back. It's puzzling because I've seen the manager come around in the past and ask the clientele how their meal was and go out of his way to amend something if a customer didn't find their dish to their liking. When we brought up the poor service, it wasn't done in a rude manner or in a disruptive way to other diners, but we were made to feel like it was our problem, not the inadequacy of the server. When bad service puts you in a foul mood and ruins your meal, it's going to be a long time before I'll feel like embracing the place again.

it's nothing really fancy, and that works for me. i'm not eating downtown or in a suburan shopping mall, and i like it that way. good place for trying something new. i'm hooked on the Malaysian coffee. i make it at home every morning. i intend on going back, but i hope to order a dish with a little less fat. the curry was so far the best i've had on Eat Street.

Go for the food, but expect nothing more

After having been to Peninsula a handful of times to fullfill my love of Southeast Asian food, I'm impressed with the unique array of food they have to offer. Starting from Roti with Curried dip to the union of Indian and Chinese cuisines and Peninsula's great presentation. But each time, I've been to Peninsula, I have not yet been impressed with the service. The first time we were there right after it was opened (with that benifit of a newly established restaurant and the crowd,) we waited a long time for our server and our food. However, it was not as bad as the party of six right next to us, who was seated when we had gotten our appetizers, yet sitll, did not get any visit from their server by the time we had gotten our check (Thank God, they had water to keep them from dying from starvation!)
Our second visit, it was much less crowded--less than 10 tables in house, and still, our server could care less about us. She had forgotten our rice, and it literally had taken them 10 minutes for the rice before another server arrived at our table with our rice. Com'on Asian food and no rice??? And yet, our server never came back to check on us until we finally could flag her down for to-go boxes and the check which our credit cards were in hands so we wouldn't lose her for another ten-fifteen minutes for another trip back to get our cards. Though we still will support Peninsula on their food, they have yet to understand of the concept of professional servers vs. familiy/friends servers. It seems to be a popular thing with ethenic restaurants to hire people who don't really know the profession which makes the restaurant seem inefficient and unprofessional. While the top-notch servers are not needed in a smaller restaurant like this one, an efficient few of service-industry crew would serve Peninsula a great wonder.

Best Malaysian on Eat Street
Posted by Robb M. on 11/08/2006
We've been seriously thinking about buying a home near Peninsula Malaysian because we can't stay away from their yummy cuisine.First, almost every dish here is an exciting adventure, creatively conceived, and well prepared. Going down the list of items on their menu, you'll find traditional coconut and red or green curry sauces with all variety of fish, chicken and beef. Additionally, you'll find some real surprises and lush side dishes to pick up any night out. The food is varied and outstanding and everyone I have brought here raves about it and in turn has brought their friends with great joy. However, there are drawbacks to the Peninsula experience. The dining room consists of one large high ceiling room with hardwood floors. The space is noisy and not condusive to small quiet groups wanting engaging conversation. Second, the waitstaff has a terrible and disarming habit of not delivering food at the appropriate times. Almost every visit I've ordered to eat here (and we've been a number of times on weekdays and weekends) our food has come staggered with some guests getting their dish way after others were served. Once I didn't get my Yam Pot until everyone else had finished eating. And I would issue something of a warning: The Chicken dishes are usually full of tiny bones. Now, when I used to order chicken in France (a completley different meat flavor than fake facotry raised chicken we eat in the U.S.) they were many bones but the wild game flavor of French chicken made it worth the trouble of all the plate-side deboning. At Pennisula, the chicken isn't wild, gamey, and range fed, it's just boney. This stems from the manner in which the cooks butcher and prepare the chicken. But the flavor of Malaysian food prepared here is phenomenal. They serve a whole bunch of very interesting bubble teas, wine and beer and there is a coconut pudding served inside a hollowed out green coconut that is absolutely out of this world. You should not miss out on this Minneapolis eat street dining sensation...........Parking is available for Peninsula after six across the street next to the Black Forest parking lot. If you park there before 6:00pm they will tow you.
