Ribs are The Best in Town
Posted by texassoccermom on 11/14/2009
My husband and I make a point to take our out of town guests to Hickory Hollow, because in our opinion it's one of the best examples of real texas bbq. Make sure you get the cole slaw along side -- it has a nice kick to it. If we ever had a complaint is really only for the long lines on Saturday night. But honestly, that's really reaching for something to complain about. I highly recommend it for family dinners, too.
Enjoy!

I just have to say the sauce is awesome but the ribs were so fatty I felt I was being ripped off. The chopped beef was mushy as well....not the best in Houston but not the worst either.

Ranch Dressing to die for
Posted by htowncoog on 10/01/2008
I have gone to this place for 4 years now and it's one of those places that you can never get tired of and by far my favorite BBQ place. In Texas, that's saying alot. First off, to the person who dissed the salad bar, that's usually the favorite spot for me because unlike alot of other places that have a token salad bar, theirs is fresh and the ranch dressing is to die for. They also keep all the other goodies (jalepaneos, zuccini sticks, carrots, etc.) there.
As for the food, I usually get the grilled chicken that's always tender and juicy and again, most other places keep some token "healthy" foods around for show, but this chicken is just wonderful and comes with hot BBQ sauce. I've also tried their smoked half chicken that just falls off the bones. The only reason why I don't eat that more often is that i go there for lunch and it gets a little messy. The prices are also very reasonable for the quality of food you get and the service is always friendly.

Good selection
Posted by awp on 02/22/2008
I went to the Hickory Hollow because I had a coupon but forgot to use it when I was there - duh! I have to eat a low fat diet so I was concerned I wouldn't be able to find anything on the menu but they do have grilled chicken and to my surprise it was really good. The chicken was juicy, tender and came with BBQ sauce on the side. I also had rice and the salad bar - which is a bit lame. It's not much of a salad bar, it's really just lettuce tomatoes and peppers.
The dining companion loved his meal and I think that if I want to treat myself I'll go back and try something a bit less bland. It is crowded and obviously very popular.

BEST BBQ & STEAKS-CHICKEN FRIED OR GRILLED!
Posted by duske on 07/20/2007
if you don't have a ton of money and you want great bbq and have a family of 4 come here. i guarantee if you do you will take home a people bag.
the salad bar contains the freshest salad super cold with crisp lettuce, the chicken fried steak has the perfect breading and instead of the generic cream gravy everyone else serves, they have their own recipe which enhances the meal not cover it up. the ribs and sauce are fab, hot hots are a fav. baked potato with grilled chicken and a salad makes a grand meal.

Hickory Hollow provides good food at a great price. One phone call is all it takes...they do all the work and supply all the trimmings for BBQ even the tea. Just save room for dessert!!

Largest chicken fried steak you 've ever seen!
Posted by groovingarv on 08/16/2006
Aside from serving the largest chicken fried steak (even the smallest is huge!) the salad bar bowl is always fresh and tasty! If you go to listen to the free music and order a glass of wine, it is like a two for one deal 'cause it comes in a mason jar and you get alot for your money. If you go for lunch or during the day stop at Heights station next door to walk off your food and top off your Texas experience.

Overrated but not bad

I'm a native Texan but am now living out of state. I come back to visit family from time to time and am always craving my hometown BBQ. This summer, my sister raved about Hickory Hollow and wanted to show it off to my husband and I on our visit and swore up and down that it was as good as we were going to get in H-town for the price and portions...but she warned us she had only been to the original location near 1960 and that her friends said they were better than the Heights' Hickory Hollow. The Heights locations was closer for us so that's where we went.
I ordererd the chicken fried steak since that was highly recommended with some chopped beef, potato salad, and grilled zuchini. I was very dissappointed in the chicken fried steak. The meat was perfectly tender but the sauce was bland and it was missing some kind of salt or something. I ate a few bites and that was that. The potato salad was jamming as well as the zucchini. I of course had room for the ribs on my husband's plate since I didn't care for either of my meats so much. The ribs were excellent and nice and tender. The sauce was really good too.
So yeah for the sides, boo for their "award winning" chicken fried steak. Maybe next time I'll try the original location on the west side of Houston and see if they do it better.

Great Food
Posted by amywynn217 on 07/07/2006
Ok, I'm not big on BBQ, in fact I hate BBQ (and yes I'm a native Texan) but I have ordered from Hickory Hollow on numerous occassions for work. The portions are huge and the chicken is not dry, as one would expect in a buffet. The prices are reasonable and they take care of everything.

Good smaritan saves the day
Posted by sandyc77013 on 05/18/2006
We visited the Hickory Hollow restaurant in the Heights on Monday after walking our dogs. After walking down heights blvd. we were searching for a dog friendly restaurant and found a fantastic one. It was great service and superb food. The have a huge patio in the back that is enclosed by a chain link fence. We got to chow down while the dogs stayed near by.
I lost my wallet in the parking lot that night and a customer found it and went
through great lengths to get it back to me. I was truly blessed that day to get
my wallet back with everything intact. Although the good smaritans refused a
reward, I still thought it was only right that I paid for their dinner.
It was such a wonderful dining experience I have already recommended it
to others.
