    Very Good

    Check the weather first!

    Posted by BocaDavie on 01/22/2009

We took the Sandia Peak Tram in March, expecting moderate weather and spectacular views from the top. We should have checked the weather reports ahead of time. Although the climate at the base of the mountain (and through most of the ride up) was accomodating, it changed rapidly as we approached the peak. When we arrived at the tram station near the summit we were engulfed in a blizzard; something we Floridians were not quite prepared for. Although we dressed warmly, one of or main goals was to get some pictures of Albuquerque from the top ofthe mountain. We waited for hours at the summit, but there was no break in the cloud cover. Fortunately, the blizzard let up on a few occasions, long enough for us to play around in the snow and walk over to the restaurant - one of the highest restaurants in North America. And... they serve hot chocolate, which we downed several cups of while waiting for the clouds to part. We finally decided that the cloud cover was there to stay and took the tram back to base. As the tram descended below the cloud cover we did get some good views of Albuquerque at night. We'll add this to our list of must-see attractions... just check the weather reports in advance so you'll actually have something to see.

    Beautiful Views

I took a ride on the Tram last October for my birthday. This is a great way to see the mountain side. The views are beautiful as you soar high above the ground, if you are lucky you may even spot some wildlife (on my first trip we spotted a bear). Once you reach the top there is a restaurant where you can sit and have a nice meal or there are hiking trails so you can continue to enjoy the beauty of the mountain, this time close up. Whatever you decide to do I highly recommend staying to watch the sunset, and once it is dark seeing the lights of Albuquerque is quite breathtaking.

Riding the tram gives you a breath taking look at Albuquerque. You are suspended high above the mountain for a ride to the top. At the top, there is a restuarant to enjoy and trails to hike.

    View from the Top

The motto for the Tram is "No oxygen mask or sherpas required" and this is a true statement. The Sandia Peak Aerial Tram takes you from the base of the Sandia Mountains to the very top inside a closed tram. As you ascend to the top of the mountain the scenery is breath taking. You see the city and the mesa out to the west and you see the wilderness of the mountains below you. If you go in the winter time you will see lots of snow. At the top of the mountain is a restaurant called High Finance it is a great restaurant but I find it a bit pricey. There is also the Sandia Peak Ski Slopes that you can take advantage of. If you are going up in the spring or fall you can take numerous hikes around the mountain on various trails. One hike is across the top of the mountain to a parking area, lookout area and a gift shop. There are also mountain bike trails that the advanced biker can take advantage of.

Wether you are a local boy or a tourist, you absolutely must take the ride of the aerial tramway to the top of the Sandia Peak Mountains at least once in your life. The view is simply amazing and the ride is thrilling! It is a breath taking view from the top. Enjoy a hot coffee or meal in the great cafe at the top. Walk along the trails.
