Hughes Net is horrendous but it's the only choice!

    Posted by nicwojslaw on 11/05/2008

We have had Hughes Net for almost 3 years now & I have to say, I absolutely hate it. The speeds are terrible (barely above dial-up), the cost is ridiculous ($300 for equipment plus $60/month) & the SECOND we get inclement weather it doesn't work & you have to pay $125 for someone to come out & look at your dish & simply tilt the dish slightly. They are getting away with highway robbery. I am actually in process of looking at high speed dial up solutions because Hughes Net is so bad.

    Better Than Dial-Up Only

    Posted by joeps3 on 06/24/2008

I'm an IT Manager and deal with internet issues every day. I would not purchase HughesNet unless the ONLY other option is dialup. The costs are a great deal higher than cable internet or DSL (average of $20 - 25 higher). If you want to download from a peer-to-peer program (such as Limewire or Morpheus), prepare to be frustrated. When it's raining or when the wind blows, your connection suffers a good bit, sometimes not working at all. Also, my $60.00 per month service plan I'm currently using allows me only 200 MB per 24 hours of usage. So if I exceed that threshold, it cuts me off for a full 24 hours. It's called the "Fair Access Policy" (fair to who?). If you are not a serious internet user and just want to check your email and go to a site here and there, I'd recommend braving the dial up connection until high-speed internet becomes available in your area. Customer service is poor. Every single time I called, the customer support tech was foreign and normally could not convey proper English to adequately answer my questions. In fact, one of them spelled out a web address for me, using an example of each letter when spelling it out ("h" as in hope, "h" as in hope, "t" as in tiger, "p" as in pink). I just let him do it. If your problem isn't identified by the "Level 1" support, they send you to "Level 2", which is normally someone who speaks good English. So no, it is not worth the est. $700 set up fee and $60 a month, far from it! I would recommend it only to a very small demographic, such as me, who feel they must have something faster than dial up internet and have no other options.

    Fair

    Requires a lot of patience.

Installion of my dish took a hours. As long as the sky was clear the service was ok (unless they were updating or doing something else to their system then it would stay down for hours at a time). If snow got on the dish, service went out and stayed out until the snow was cleared off (by climbing a ladder and hitting it with a broom stick after the snow storm had passed). Tech support was horrible! There was a very long wait on hold before a tech picked up to help (at times over an hour). I could not wait until my contract was over so that I no longer had to contend with the aggrivation.
