Way over priced
Posted by goldiestar12 on 10/17/2009
No way, never again. I've never been to this restaurant before but visited because of a wedding dinner. We had a limited menu to pick from because of the event. We were a little late so we didn't get to eat the appetizers. The plate was okay. Maybe my expectations were a bit high but they were located on Broadway across from the Witte Museum and located near Alamo Heights. What we got for the price we paid, we could've gone to Taco Cabana and got the same amount of food, FRESH and cheaper by $6. It was weird how fast the food came out. We didn't get to eat the appetizer so when they brought me the bill, I noticed they didn't give me credit for it. The manager immediately closed her eyes and shook her head and simply said "That's the price of the plate, sorry". What kind of customer service is that? If she wasn't going to give me credit for the food NOT eaten that I paid for, she could've offered a coupon for a free appetizer for my next visit, a gift card for the amount of the appetizer OR offered to have them cook it for me to take to-go. Not very good customer service, would've gone to Mi Tierra's in the Market Square. Cheaper for the same food, their salsa is way better and the tostada chips don’t come from a bag, they make them fresh and waaay better customer service. On top of that, Its located in downtown San Antonio. I’m Mexican-American and do not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good food for a good price.

Excellent Establishment

Wow, I'm not sure what restaurant Yaxx stepped into, but it wasn't Tomatillos. I've been going to Tomatillos for several years and have never had a bad experience. The food is great, the ambience is lively, and I always have a great experience.
It's convenient to my office downtown and it's one of our favorite places to go for lunch.
It's a great restaurant and does get packed on the weekends, so maybe that's why yaxx found themselves waiting a bit; how loooong is lllllloooooong? I go there to take my time, be attended to, and RELAX.
Overall i think this restaurant is fantastic. Don't believe everything you read, including my comments, visit Tomatillos and make your own conclusions.

Horrible service, rude staff, disgusting food!
Posted by YaXx on 08/02/2009
This is the worst "restaurant" I've ever been in San Antonio...
The host was so rude and didn't say Hello, Welcome or nothing... just looked at us and says "yes"? What!? How do you say just yes!! you're supposed to say " Hello, Welcome or something similar to greet the people!
We had an event early this year in there... close to 40 people... and there was this lady... OMG! her name was Helen or something like that... she was rude and by the way she was looking at some of the people in our tables, she was profiling...
Then, the food... disgusting and overpriced! and COLD!!
It took a loooooooong time to served drinks that actually I went to the bar by myself to get us some drinks!
I do not recommend this place! don't go there... It is actually a waste of time and money!
First time... LAST TIME, Period!
Too bad they called themselves "best places in San Antonio" Yeah right... to scare customers away!!!

Best TEX-MEX in San Antonio
Posted by TTAM on 07/17/2009
I've come to Tomatillos on several occasions. Rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, and when I feel like eating great Tex-Mex Food! I love their margaritas, the festive atmosphere, and the great service! If you haven't been there, you're definitely missing out!

Best Mexican food I've found in SA
Posted by SATXJohn on 07/08/2009
We've lived in San Antonio for about 5 years now and have tried many of our friends' recommendations and have found ourselves to be disappointed most of the time. Tomatillos kept popping up as one to try but we'd never been there. We went for the first time the other night and found out what our friends were talking about - the food is probably the best Mexican we've had in San Antonio (and I'm picky since we're Texans), the margaritas were fantastic, and it was a great experience overall. It made enough of an impression on me that I felt I need to write a review; we've definitely found our Mexican food of choice in SA!

I like their new menu! Tacos al Pastor and Tacos Albanil are my new favorites! Wash it all down with a margarita or a tomaccino!

1st time there, last time ever!!!
Posted by elda1996 on 04/26/2009
We went to eat there for our parents 40th anniversary and it was horrible! It took the waitress about an hour to come take our order, the salsa for the chips was nothing but crushed tomatoes and water. It didn't have a taste at all, I asked the waitress for another salsa it took them another hour to bring that and it looked like Chili, like Wendy's chili, that was SUPER SUPER HOT!! The food wasn't all that and to top it off I was sick the next day. When they brought the cake for my parents they were just like here you go and walked away, no singing or anything. I wouldn't recommend this restaurants to any of my friends. It was overpriced and the service was very very slow... The only thing Mexican was the Margaritas. That's all!

What is this?
Posted by SATXFamily on 03/29/2008
This used to be one of my favorite places. My family and I ate there last night. My wife said her tea had a hint of sour milk flavor. I tried it and indeed it tasted funky. She ordered the Sonora Plate and I ordered the Tres Colores Enchiladas. My wife wondered why her enchilada tasted like fish, because she thought the menu said it was a chicken enchilada. I tried her enchilada and it tasted exactly like canned tuna. A blindfolded person would not have been able to tell the difference between tuna and what was in that enchilada. To be sure she didn't misread the menu, I grabbed one and yes it was "supposed" to be chicken. I am unaware of any mexican spices which impart fish flavor. On the bright side, the chicken enchilada which came with my plate only had a slight fishy flavor. In addition, the waiter provided decent service. Won't be going back.

GREAT chips and salsa!
Posted by dcis1970 on 01/13/2008
I have only eaten there twice but will definitely go back. I LOVE their salsa and tortillas taste homemade. Their sopapillas are wonderful! The only thing I would say they could improve on is the service. Their staff does not appear to be very friendly. The hostess we have had both times didn't smile and there was some manager with blonde hair that looked uncomfortable because she was walking REALLY funny in shoes that were obviously too high for her. She did not smile- probably because she couldn't walk in those shoes and her feet were killing her- and did not appear to be friendly. The waiters could have been a bit more attentive. We waited quite awhile before they refilled our drinks and came to check on us to make sure we didn't need anything.
The food WAS great! The atmosphere is GREAT and we will go back but I would like to see an improvement on the staff and service.

fun innovated tex mex!
Posted by mereynolds on 12/25/2007
I grew up going to Tomatillo's (hey it's been around for 20 years so they must be doing SOMETHING right) but lately they have really stepped up the quality of food and service. And plus the restaurant is so big, I can always get a table quickly. They have a really distinctive, fresh salsa that I LOVE with just the right amount of chile and cilantro, and there's some cool new stuff on the menu that I haven't really seen anywhere else. So I end up over there at least once a week for the blue corn tacos nortenos and a mercedes margarita.
