Editorial Review for Backspace – by Citysearch Editor
Opened in its current location in 2004, Backspace is the type of boutique-as-co-op San Francisco is best at. Almost everything from the clothes to the art on the walls is locally made and sometimes even designed by the customers themselves. The clothes range from basic cotton hoodies and tees to downright beautiful handmade pieces like a soft leather clutch printed with beetle silhouettes by local designer Gina Pericini. Prices are equally varied with everything from $10 shirts on the large sale rack to $200 one-of-a-kind artfully deconstructed knits that can be custom fit to your body. The shop boasts whimsical jewelry like delicate charm necklaces and feathered earrings, as well as the largest collection of local designer Rebecca Vandersteen?s badass Venus Superstar earcuffs in the city. Susan Jones, the owner and all-around den mama, offers afterhours personal shopping and has the right kind of gently perceptive demeanor to actually make this sound appealing. In Short
Housed in a former church, this quaint shop off the Haight Street beaten path offers approachable yet stylish fashions at affordable prices. Local designers' creations from Mike & Chris mingle with sassy dresses by Sass & Bide, designer denim, and a vast selection of wearables from Grey Ant and Zigi. Each item is handpicked by owner Susan Jones.
