This is a classic example of urban planning. Aside from the mostly silent people doing the ambulating, the place is lifeless. No cozy cafes, no taco stands, no curiosity shops. Since you look mostly at blank buildings as you stroll, the canal might just as well have been built in a penitentiary. The nearby White River slices through Indianapolis, and it is barren of waterside restaurants or virtually anything else of... view moreLike this review?Yes|Flag AbuseProvided by Citysearch

I am one of the fortunate ones that call the Canal home. Many in Indy are in awe when they learn that I live on what is the city's best attraction. It is wonderful to be in a place that people come to for fun and relaxation and never have to leave. Even the ducks stay through winter!Like this review?Yes|Flag AbuseProvided by Citysearch
The Canal in Indianapolis is the best free public place in America. The city has recovered blighted areas of the city and transformed them into a redevelopment area with stores, high-density private condominiums, a museum and plenty of attractions including several monuments to our war heroes. This is what I call true integration of solid development in the context of nature preservation and enhancement. Go Indy!Like this review?Yes|Flag AbuseProvided by Citysearch

Sorry, Indy, the Canal was a wonderful idea and done very well...BUT...the city allowed whatever development possible to clutter its boundaries. How about the state parking garage that overlooks the canal. Or the back door of an office building? Not to mention the numerous, bland, suburban-type apartment buildings, some of which are already beginning to show their wear.
While the State Museum and the Historical... view more
