The plantar fascia is a thick band of supportive tissue that begins on the bottom of the heel and runs toward the toes. This fibrous band helps to stabilize and support your foot when you are standing, walking, or running.

Perform some type of aerobic exercise daily. Good examples are running, walking, cycling and using an elliptical machine. Any exercise that uses your legs and elevates your heart rate will work. Be sure to check with your primary care doctor before starting an exercise program. If you have foot problems, ask one of our doctors which forms of exercise would be best for you.

When cartilage damage is further advanced, more involved surgical techniques are required. In a limited number of patients a joint replacement may be appropriate. More often, when cartilage damage is extensive, a fusion of the joint is called for. Although the big toe joint is stiff after this procedure, it does eliminate the pain while still allowing an active lifestyle.
Bunions
Our feet are highly intricate structures. Each foot has twenty six bones (one half of all the bones in your body are in the feet and hands). Each foot has twenty six muscles and fifty two ligaments. When all of these parts are working together, we can stand, walk and run efficiently and smoothly. Our feet are truly architectural wonders. Unfortunately, there are often inborn or acquired imbalances in our foot structure. Over time, these imbalances can cause many foot problems. These problems include heel pain, bunions, tendonitis and hammertoes. Even pain in the legs, hips or back can come from poor foot structure or alignment.
Gangrene
As the peripheral vascular disease worsens, the skin on the feet will become less supple and hair growth on the foot will stop. The skin will feel cool to the touch and may have a shiny appearance. Abrasions, skin cuts and other foot problems will be slow to heal or will not heal at all. In severe cases gangrene will develop necessitating amputation.
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails are a common problem for children. As children grow, there is often a mismatch in the size of the nail bed and the overlying nail. This causes the nail to push into the skin on the sides of the nail leading to pain and possibly infection. Other causes of ingrown nails in children include shoes that are too tight and cutting a nail too close to the skin.

Corns
Hammertoes can lead to significant pain. The parts of the toes that become prominent can rub on shoes or even rub too much on an adjacent toe. This can be painful. It can also lead to the development of painful corns on the toes. The abnormal toe alignment can also cause too much pressure on the ball of the foot, leading to pain there.
Calluses
Plantar warts are often mistaken for corns or calluses and can be distinguished by the “cauliflower” like texture of the wart, tiny black dots (capillary clots within the tissue) and bleeding after removing a callus that might be covering the wart. Because plantar warts are so deep in the tissue, treatments such as freezing and over the counter acids are usually ineffective. More successful treatments performed by the doctors at Indy Podiatry include blistering agents, stronger topical acids, prescription strength creams and injections to stimulate your child’s natural immune response.
Fungus
Medically, this condition is known as onychomycosis (ah nee ko my cose is). This problem occurs when a fungus gets under a nail and begins to grow.
Lesions
There are some topical prescription medications that are sometimes successful at killing the wart virus. These are applied based on the directions your doctor gives you. These treatments require periodic trimming of the lesions by your podiatrist.

Physical Therapy
Placing a heel lift in each shoe can reduce some of the excess strain on the back of the heel. Stretching exercises to increase calf flexibility are important in curing this problem and preventing its recurrence. Wearing running shoes also provides good foot support and helps with this condition. Sometimes a walking boot is used to immobilize the ankle and let the area completely rest. Physical therapy is sometimes ordered to help reduce the inflammation and pain and to help improve the flexibility of the calf muscles.

Achilles Tendonitis
Some children are born with flat feet. In some of these children, a more normal arch appears as they grow. Unfortunately, there are many painful conditions related to flat feet such as Achilles tendonitis and problems with the plantar fascia. If your child has flat feet and has foot, leg or lower back pain they should be evaluated in our office. Many types of flat feet put tremendous excess pressure on the joints of the feet, ankles and legs. This often leads to joint problems later in life.

A common misconception is that tight shoes lead to bunions. While tight shoes can make a bunion worse, they rarely are the initial cause. If you have a bunion, blame your family. Bunions seem to be inherited. Some people are simply born with a foot type that will develop this problem.

Fungus Toenails
Toenail fungus can develop following trauma to a toe. Exposure to the fungus can occur in a locker room or at a swimming pool. Fungi grow best in dark, warm, moist conditions so the environment inside shoes is often ideal for fungus growth.
Hammertoes
A hammertoe is an abnormal alignment of a toe other than the big toe. Normally, a toe should be straight. In almost all cases, people are born with toes that are normally aligned. Unfortunately, as we age, many of us develop hammertoes.
Heel Pain
Curing posterior heel pain requires calming the inflammation, resting the foot and increasing calf flexibility. Ice therapy and anti-inflammatory medications can be used to reduce the inflammation. Stopping exercises that stress the calf and Achilles is important. This includes walking, running and the use of stair climbers and elliptical machines.

Imagine stepping on a small piece of glass. Most of us would feel instant pain. We would then take action to remove the glass, clean the wound, apply a bandage and take pressure off the area so that the wound could heal. Someone with neuropathy would not feel the glass in their foot and would continue walking, possibly driving the glass further into the foot. This person would not realize there was a problem until a foot infection developed.
Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of a toenail pushes into the adjacent skin. This causes soreness or even significant pain and infection.
