Preventive Care

Dental Care
We are very excited to announce our Digital Dental Xray machine. We now have a wonderful way to complete our comprehensive dental care for our pets.
Vaccination
Vaccinations are necessary for the health of your pet, they prevent a variety of diseases. We follow the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, and State guidelines in setting our standards of care for our patients. A Rabies vaccine is required for all dogs, cats and ferrets in the state of Maryland from 12 weeks of age and older. See below for more information on vaccine recommendations.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Annual physical exams are recommended to ensure the health of your pet. We provide a lifetime of care for your pets from birth into their senior years. Even if your pet appears healthy they can age considerably; just one human year can be equivalent to 5-10 pet years in a dog or cats life. Our veterinarians can detect potential problems during a physical exam, from heart murmurs, changes in lung sounds, changes in size and shape of internal organs, lymph nodes and possibly tumors. Checking the eyes can detect early signs of cataracts or other eye problems as well ears can be infected deep in the canal where it may go un-noticed at home. Dental disease, skin issues, lumps and bumps, and changes in weight will all be assessed during your pet’s exam.
Nutritional Counseling
Dental disease causes pain and discomfort. Pets instinctively hide pain, so often we don’t realize the extent of their dental disease and the discomfort it is causing them. Signs of mouth pain include increased or excessive drooling, decreased appetite, slow eating, face rubbing, and decreased interest in chewing on toys or treats.
Comprehensive Examination
Many health and behavioral changes in older pets can go un- noticed. They may be accepted as old age changes but can actually be signs of a treatable underlying disease. Annual exams give you an opportunity to ask our veterinarians questions about your pet’s health and environment. Our veterinarians may recommend additional tests to determine your pet’s overall health status or they may make recommendations for things you can do at home to improve overall quality of life.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
Heartworm disease is treatable, it can be fatal, and it is much easier to prevent than to let your dog suffer from the effects of heartworm disease. We recommend a monthly, year-round heartworm prevention and annual testing of your dog for heartworm disease. We recommend the use of monthly preventatives such as Proheart, Revolution, and Heartgard.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
All boarding animals are required to be current on their vaccinations. These include Rabies, Bordetella (kennel cough), DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus), *Canine Influenza Virus vaccines for dogs (*not required but strongly recommended). Cats are required to have Rabies and FVRCP (Feline distemper) vaccines. To ensure your pet has the best protection while boarding, we strongly recommend that these vaccines be updated at least 2 weeks prior to boarding. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about whether your pet is due for any routine vaccinations.
Pain Management
Pain management is a crucial aspect of any pet surgery, and we go to great lengths to make sure our patients are as comfortable as possible. Our hospital has a multitude of pain-killers available for our patients and we routinely use combinations of drugs to ensure a quick and comfortable recovery for your dog or cat. Our staff is trained in Constant Rate Infusion (CRI) pain medication so that animals will be kept pain free throughout their stay. Animals feel pain just like we do and making sure they have the best in pain management after surgery is very important to us.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Thyroid testing: TT4 and FT4 are often needed to determine if your pet has Hypothyroidism (which is especially common in overweight dogs or dogs with skin problems)or Hyperthyroidism (which is common in older cats).
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
CATS: In the past it was thought that cats were not affected by heartworms, with current research we can now prove that they are affected. Cats with heartworms show signs of primary lung disease, Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease (HARD). However, even one worm in a cat can cause death without any symptoms at all. Testing for heartworm disease is more complex in cats than in dogs, and treatment options are limited and carry high risk of complications. We recommend year round use of Revolution, a monthly prevention for heartworm disease, fleas, intestinal parasites, mites and some tick prevention for your cat. Although cats that go outdoors are at a higher risk, even indoor cats can be infected with heartworms. In a study by the American Heartworm society, it was found that of the cats tested positive for heartworms, 20% of them were living indoors only.

Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
By spaying your female pet, you’re protecting her against potentially deadly diseases, including bacterial infections, reproductive tract diseases, and several types of cancer. You also won’t have to worry about her going into heat. This means avoiding the mess that often accompanies the heat cycle in female dogs and the pacing and crying that happens with female cats. In addition, spaying your pet will help control the dog and cat overpopulation problem, keeping more animals out of shelters.
Ear Infection Treatment
If your dog suffers from frequent ear infections, surgical intervention can reduce their occurrence by improving airflow into the ear canal.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
While we sometimes think of it just for urinary tract infections, urine tests can provide diagnostic information about a number of diseases. The collection method is important for this test because it may depend on what disease is suspected. Urine can be caught in a cup during urination or by placing a needle directly into the bladder (cystocentesis, which isn’t as bad as it sounds), or even with a catheter.

Obesity Treatment
This is a topic that can be very difficult for pet owners to fully understand and even more difficult to educate themselves in! In this economy obtaining the appropriate information (that does not have underlying goals to be met) such as suggested feeding amounts, the best protein bases, wholesome ingredients and dietary schedule is a hard task. Pet owners are over looking this topic due to the food distributors/wholesalers who intensify the actual benefits and amounts of food to feed each pet due to their advertising. They also suggest their feeding amounts by giving us as pet owners a broad range wt. table with over estimated amounts of food to feed, however, everyone should know that each animal has their, very own, unique, metabolic ability and should be fed according to their individual needs.

Cholesterol: As it is in people, cholesterol is a fat. Unlike in people, it doesn’t contribute to heart disease in dogs and cats. Increased cholesterol is less common in cats than in dogs. Several diseases (diabetes, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s, or kidney disease) can elevate cholesterol levels.

At Green Valley Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer a surgical suite complete with the latest in monitoring equipment – ensuring your pet’s surgery and anesthesia are always performed as safely as possible. Our facility’s full complement of monitoring equipment includes ECG, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, carbon dioxide levels and body temperature. Warm water heating blankets ensure your pet’s temperature is maintained throughout the procedure.

Ophthalmic Surgery
Dr. Page enjoys keeping up with the latest medical advances and obtains additional continuing education credits yearly, more than twice the requirement. She loves orthopedic and soft tissue surgery as well as internal medicine. She has taken many advanced course such as cranial cruciate ligament repair, hip and elbow surgery, advanced eye and eyelid surgery, abdominal exploratory and intestinal reconstructive surgeries. Other courses have included ultrasound and chiropractic medicine. She believes in advance pain management practices for our small companions.
Veterinary Surgery
Probably the most common soft tissue surgery performed on pets is the removal of masses, or lumps. Most of these masses, once removed and tested, are found to be benign (nonharmful); however, occasionally they are more serious. Early removal and accurate diagnosis of a lump is necessary to improve the outcome in your pet if the mass is cancerous.

Our veterinary hospital offers surgery, dentistry, digital radiology, ultrasonography, laboratory diagnostics, grooming, and boarding, in addition to preventative medical services and critical care.
X-Ray
Green Valley Animal Hospital has upgraded to digital radiography. The principles are similar, but the images are captured on a digital recording device and displayed on a computer screen. No x-ray film is used. These images are easy to store as well as to transmit to other hospitals, or to copy to send home with you the pet owner.
Dental Radiology
Established in 1970, Green Valley Animal Hospital is a full-service veterinary hospital that has been under the ownership of Dr. Laura Page Warden since October 2003. Our hospital is outfitted with digital radiology, including digital dental radiology, ultrasound, a complete in-house laboratory, surgery suite, ICU, and many vital tools that allow us to quickly diagnose and treat our most critical patients.
Microchipping
Bayer’s ResQ Microchip which will permanently identify your pet. The ResQ microchip was chosen because it is an international and standardized chip so that pets can travel out of the United States. Standardization is important so that the microchip can be identified by all scanners. Some of the microchips produced and sold by individual stores are not standardized and the scanners used at local shelters are unable to read them, making them useless. We recommend this for all pets and we can place a microchip at anytime should you decide on one for your pet! ResQ does not charge any fee to register your pet or annual registration fees and registration can easily be completed online.

Once dogs and cats begin entering their senior years, their health care needs become unique, and our Senior Wellness plan for your pet is designed to guide you through the potential pitfalls of caring for a senior pet.
Dog Training
Ryan joined the Green Valley team at the end of September 2020. He has 14 years of experience in kennel and daycare environments. Ryan has done positive, behavioral dog training at jobs which he was mostly self-taught.

Small Animal Vet
Dr. Stabler joined our practice in July of 2012 and we are thrilled to have her as part of our GVAH family. Dr. Stabler has special interests in internal medicine and behavior. She lives in Laytonsville with her husband and 2 children. I grew up on a grain and beef cattle farm. On the farm, I was always the one that raised the orphan calves or tried to sneak the farm kittens home with me. But it wasn’t until I went to school at Delaware Valley College that I realized I really wanted to become a veterinarian. While working as a technician at a clinic, I always enjoyed the problem solving that came along with medicine and I loved watching surgeries. After graduating with a large animal science major, I attended veterinary school at Purdue University in Indiana. But, I always knew I would be back to Maryland. Now, many years later, I still love being a small animal veterinarian and working at Green Valley Animal Hospital.
Equine Vet
Coming to America in 1980, she met and married her husband Pete an Equine Veterinarian, they have two children. Sarah loves her job at GVAH. She’s very interested in conformation as an important aspect for the health and wellbeing of horses and dogs. She enjoys watching dog shows and looking at the latest grooming creations.
