General Info:
Menil Collection is a museum housing the collection of John and Dominique de Menil. The museum building features satellite gallery spaces and related cultural institutions set in a park-like setting. The collection consists of more than 15,000 works dating from the Paleolithic era to the present day. The antique art, which includes works from Paleolithic to later pre-Christian eras, consists of a collection of historical material from Europe and Asia Minor. It has Byzantine artifacts and icon paintings, along with a small selection of medieval art. Its tribal art collection includes meticulously executed masks and daily essentials, such as combs and bowls. The collection of 20th century art focuses on European modernism, Surrealism and American postwar art. It organizes programs and events that are open to the public and are held at Menil Collection.

Great Space and Free!

This space is always enjoyable. Nice and interesting exhibits. I love the trees around the museum as well.

Houston Treature

The Menils left such a wonderful legacy to the people of Houston. Their namesake museum is spacious, interesting, and free. It is surrounded by the chapels, lots of greenery & trees. I wish there was a beautiful small cafe serving drinks, coffee, light snacks on/near the grounds in walking distance. I would like to see more music, such as chamber orchestras performing on the lawn or in the foyer, maybe a little m... view more

Incredible works by Maggrite

It's amazing how many people I know who have lived in Houston for several years and have never visited this great museum. There are some great works by surrealist painter Renee Maggrite, among pieces by Warhol (yes, even have the Campbell's Soup can), and Leger. Great place to visit on a sunny Houston weekend. And don't forget to bring food to take a picnic on the park across the museum. Makes for a memorable date... view more

The Menil Is Nice

The only downside to this multi-genre museum is that the exhibits rarely change so you cant visit it that often unless your going to see one of your fave pieces.

world class

How fortunate for we Houstonians to have an art collection such as this housed in such a tranquil setting. We love the Menil.....there is always an intriguing exhibit.

Place to relax

I reviewed its architecture in the Museum district category, so here let me say that unlike most museums this one is not at all crowded its a quiet restful place to spend some time with art and relax. Best of all its Free.
